The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit on behalf of two University of Wisconsin-Madison employees who were denied insurance coverage for gender reassignment surgery.

The Wisconsin Group Insurance Board had allowed for the coverage back in July based on a provision in the Affordable Care Act (aka ObamaCare), but (reluctantly) agreed to eliminate it at the behest of the state Department of Justice beginning on February 1.

Elective surgeries should never be covered by insurance.

Proud to be from Wisconsin. Not often that those boys at the University get it right. But I like to congratulate them when they do.

I demand surgery to add 3 feet to my height and make me a star basketball player. Which government agency should I contact?

See this is where we are.

They can’t allow a situation in which these “sex change” surgeries aren’t covered by insurance.

It’s no longer a situation in which we can call this an elective surgery, and thus, not covered by insurance.

Instead, esp. with the ACLU involved with a lawsuit, now it’s a legal matter. Now it’s a violation of constitutional rights to not cover these operations under medical insurance policies.

Just think about that. They are claiming you have a constitutional right to a sex change operation.

It’s out of the hands of doctors, therapists, mental health professionals in dealing with gender dysphoria patients.

Instead, it’s in the hands of lawyers. At least that is how the liberals are viewing this. And they are forcing themselves on us, because they are filing a lawsuit, which then must be defended .

This is a crazy world sometimes......

“Elective surgeries should never be covered by insurance.”

I respectively disagree. The term “elective surgeries” simply refers to surgeries that can wait for a time convenient to the surgeon and the patient. They include such essentials as: hernia repairs, cataract surgery, mastectomies for breast cancer, etc. At the other end of the scale are emergency surgeries (the fodder for most ER-type medical shows).

OTOH, sex-reassignment surgeries (IMHO) are a form of cosmetic surgery. Vanity, not medical necessity is the reason for such procedures. There, I completely agree with you — these should not be covered. (Even some cosmetic surgeries — such as facial reconstruction, following a severe trauma — are also medical necessities. Again, IMHO).

gender-reassignment is covered?

well then, I have nose envy and my life cannot be fulfilled until I receive nose reassignment surgery. I have known from birth I should have had a smaller nose. Denying my right to self fulfillment is a violation of my noses rights. Where do I sign up?

There are some elective procedures that should be covered by insurance, e.g. cataracs or wisdom teeth.

I'd agree that elective "cosmetic" procedures should be on your dime.

Did you know, the only way that breast reduction surgery for women is covered by insurance is if the excess weight of her breasts is causing health problems like neck or back pain? It’s not covered if they’re only causing psychiatric problems, such as the case of Soleil Moon Frye, who suffered emotionally because her breasts grew so fast and so large that she suffered taunting, leers from creepy older men, and the like. Needless to say, it also affected her acting career adversely.

So why, if a young girl can’t get surgery like this covered by insurance, should insurance cover a sex-change operation just because someone THINKS they’re the opposite gender? The only thing insurance should be covering is the psychotherapy required for a gender identity disorder.

Aren’t they talking about elective surgery? If the trannies win, I’m moving to Wisconsin for a facelift and billing it to the taxpayers. Easy to make the case that I really truly desperately NEED it, can’t be the real me without it.

Yes, it is superfluous cosmetic surgery that insurance companies do not cover.
