GOP senator: Trump should spend less time at Mar-a-Lago
The Hill ^ | 04/18/2017 | Max Greenwood

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) said on Tuesday that President Trump's frequent trips to his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida bother not only her, but other members of the Republican caucus.

"I do wish he would spend more time in Washington, D.C.," Ernst said during a town hall meeting. "That's what we have the White House for."

Since he took office, Trump has spent seven out of the last 13 weekends at his self-described "Southern White House" in Palm Beach. The visits have stirred controversy, in part because of the enormous costs associated with such frequent travel.

One estimate of the weekend trips by CNN placed the cost so far above $20 million, putting Trump on track to spend more on travel in his first year in office than former President Barack Obama spent in eight years.

Before becoming president, Trump frequently assailed Obama for his excessive travel and vacations, arguing that the then-president should stay in Washington to work rather than play golf on the weekends.

"I think that has been bothering not just me but some other members of our caucus," Ernst said of Trump's Mar-a-Lago trips.

I agree, but I don’t think it has to be.

They have moles on the inside, if anything.

Could be wrong about that,. but that’s my take.

Funny part was that I copied that to make a correction.

Cut, pasted, and posted it again identically. Not that was the real laugher.

Had to post a correction twice.

Yeah, Joni, I remember those campaign ads about castrating hogs and how you’d really know how to cut port once you got to Washington. So, now you’re there, so why not stop taking cheap shots at the president and start taking serious looks at all those billions spent on farm subsidies and see if you can find some pork to cut there.

I bet there is some wasteful spending, or pork, in all those farm subsidies.

That could work. Grew up in southeastern PA and loved Lebanon baloney. Tasted even better after some Lebanese hash.

Didn’t Senator Ernst run on a populist platform? Iowa is a purple state which went Republican for the Presidential race last year due to Trump’s appeal to voters who felt disenfranchised. In our modern age of instant communication, why must the President be parked in the White House most of the time? For that matter, why do we need Congressmen and Senators to be at a central location in Washington? The technology exists to allow them to participate from an office or even a residence within their district or state. The Capitol building could be turned into a museum with back office space for the functions of the legislative branch. If the Congressmen and Senators had to work and live in their home districts or states, they may be less likely to become creatures of the swamp.

I wonder if he still worries about bugs in the WH that his team has not yet uncovered.

the WH isn’t being renovated, the oval office is getting security enhancements that are arguably termed a “renovation”. but the trips to florida are weekends and holidays.

he isn’t going to his florida resort any more or less frequently than he did when he was a private citizen. no one expected him to degrade his life style when he became leader of the free world.

it’s our first mega-millionaire as president. he’s just different. it came with the package.

I love how the Democrats are suddenly concerned about spending money. That’s fantastic. So I guess they should now be perfectly willing to work with us on cutting the federal budget then.

Okay Joni, and you and your colleagues should stop having so much free time while America is being yanked back from the brink by Mar a Lago’s owner. Get out of the wagon and PUSH for Pete’s sake!

None of the ‘foreign’ dignitaries want to go to the WH because THEY know it is bugged....

Of course we have quite a few ‘Reps’ who LIVE in DC and area and the only time they go back to their own district is for an election or fund raiser....

I can see CNN etal fingerprints on this.

They ‘ask’ a loaded question (to which there is no answer - such as Do you think DT should spend more time in the WH and the idiot answers to the affirmative AND CNN etal scream out with the headline

SEN XXXXX says trump should spend more time in DC...of course the ‘dead giveaway’ is ‘and many others of the caucus’.....

These are idiots that start work at 11, leave at 3, (have a ‘sit down lunch’ and claim they are working so hard..

BRILLIANT IDEA.... if the workload and ‘long’ hours are getting to you, GO GET A REAL JOB, for a REAL Company, not some influence peddler.

I’d be tempted to have some off duty Mossad go over it with a fine tooth comb (accompanied by a trusted U.S. staffer, of course). Those guys know what they are doing.

When these RINOs make public statements like this, one wonders what the impetus behind it is. Donor pressure?

She’s just another cookie-cutter RINO, NOTHING SPECIAL AT ALL.

So many to drain, so little time.

I have a picture of the sophisticated heads and royalty of France, Italy, the Arab Emirates, Japan, etc. being wined, dined and Trumped at Camp David.

Maybe the younger Prime Minister of Canada would like it, he could bring his ice skates or hiking boots for some real fun in the woods.

Mar-a-Lago is the IDEAL place for the President to hold meeting with world leaders....the plush surroundings, the tropical gardens, the world-class accomodations, service, meals, privacy and security all serve to set the heads of state (and many times, their wives) at ease, relax them, soften them up and get them in a good state of mind for their meetings when The Donald springs the Art of the Deal on them and snaps it shut.....and gets most of what he wants.
