New Orleans officials removed the first of four prominent Confederate monuments early Monday, the latest Southern institution to sever itself from symbols viewed by many as a representation racism and white supremacy.
The first memorial to come down was the Liberty Monument, an 1891 obelisk honoring the Crescent City White League.
Workers arrived to begin removing the statue, which commemorates whites who tried to topple a biracial post-Civil War government in New Orleans, around 1:25 a.m. in an attempt to avoid disruption from supporters who want the monuments to stay, some of whom city officials said have made death threats.

I grew up in Alabama and definitely sympathize with the South in these matters. However, I like all I know in my southern family, harbor no hate for “Yankees.” Like most on FR, our hatred is for liberals. The current cold civil war is not bound by regions of the country and pits liberal cities (North and South) vs. suburban/rural Americans.

I live in Metairie and our church is full of black church goers. We love each other and they love our church. Of course there are pockets of generational poverty that are problematic but that is because New Orleans has not addressed that issue. The city council should all be fired along with the mayor. Our church brought property in one of the poverty areas and we are starting a community center and eventually a trade school and all sorts of out reach programs to help them better themselves. We are doing it - not the City. Like I said we are a melting pot community. But the left hates when people get along. It doesn’t follow the Marxist agenda.
And yet, I’ll wager that you know folks who will NOT ever leave the city. I’ve known quite a few.
And who ordered Southerners to fight Lampster? Lincoln?
No more legitimate than the “black bloc” rioters.
New Orleans has become a tourist attraction and many minorities work and vacation there. So They must believe this will help the economy of a once great city.
But may from the south will find other destinations after reading this report. I for one will avoid the location.

And yet, FIVE SLAVE STATES remained in the UNION, and the Indian tribes from Canada to Mexico went on the warpath against the UNION at that time. Only the Pawnee and a few members of the other tribes remained loyal to the UNION.
When Chivington raided the village at SAND CREEK he believed he was attacking “RED REBELS” and even captured two Confederate agents in the Cheyenne camp.
Will Chivington and “The Massacre at Sand Creek” now be “reconstructed” as a heroic battle against Confederate Indians and slavery?
Just for the record, as late as 1885 the US Cavalry were still freeing slaves, mostly other tribesmen, whites and Mexican slaves, from the Indians.

Oh, yeah- there are tons of STUPID people who will remain in the hole that is N.O. until they take their last breath-but I don’t know any. I have no family left in Orleans parish-and none who would ever go back. Born and raised there I cannot understand the affection/addiction some have.

Well, a lot of my ancestors from upstate NY joined the union army. Maybe I’ll get a pass on the reparations thing. LOL!

The Indian tribes joined the Confederacy and went to war, from Canada to Mexico. Would you also attack them with the same vigor as the North did the Confederacy?

This is a subject many do not want to face.
You keep saying that, but this is factually incorrect. According to the North, Slavery wasn't under any threat, so your claim doesn't even make sense on the face of it.
The South went to war because the North invaded them. For nearly two years Lincoln reassured them that they could keep slavery so long as they recognized the authority of Washington D.C. to control their trade and finances.
The reason you keep bringing up the slavery issue is because you've got absolutely no moral justification for the invasion absent the false claim of "the war was over slavery."
The bloodshed of 750,000 people has to be justified somehow, and "Money" doesn't sound so good as a justification. People would rather believe they fought for some moral reason beyond just power and greed.
Unfortunately, the truth appears to be that the war was fought over power and greed.
Indirectly, yes. Had Lincoln not sent his forces to invade, the Southerners would not have had to defend their states.
