"The blast was huge and could be heard in Damascus," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the UK based monitoring group.

The airport lies about 25km (15 miles) south-east of Syria's capital.

The blast was reportedly followed by a large fire. There is no word on casualties. The cause is unclear......

Thanks for your astute analysis of what probably happened.

My first (wild) guess is that Hezbollah was receiving a large weapons shipment from Iran, then Mossad learned of it in time for Israel to take it out. Just a guess, but that sort of thing has happened a number of times....

Not happening. Israel will never allow itself to be cut in half. If anything, taking out Syria enables the world body to break Syria in half with the western piece going to the Palis and the eastern part to the Kurds. Or something along those lines.

+1

The Damascus hub is reportedly used by Hezbollah to transfer weapons between Iran and Syrian government-backed fighters on some of Syria’s toughest front lines.

Rebel sources said that the explosions appeared to have caused a fire in a closed military area of the complex used by Tehran to supply arms to Iranian-backed groups in the conflict.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is backed in the country’s brutal civil-war by Russia, Iran and regional Shi’ite militias, including Hezbollah, a close ally of Tehran.

What does Israel say?

An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment on the allegations.

However, speaking from the US, Israel’s Intelligence Minister, Israel Katz, said:

“I can confirm that the incident in Syria corresponds completely with Israel’s policy to act to prevent Iran’s smuggling of advanced weapons via Syria to Hezbollah in Iran. Naturally, I don’t want to elaborate on this. [...] The Prime Minister has said that whenever we receive intelligence that indicates an intention to transfer advanced weapons to Hezbollah, we will act.”

Bad stuff. The rebels get a lot of foreign support. This is another example.

Including, until Trump took office, the United States.

Reminds me of the Israeli airstrike on a trainload of armaments a few years ago.

I think Saudi Arabia and Israel are working together on Iran with Syria being a pathway to that end and that cooperation will continue after Iran is dealt with.

President Trump has said he wants to deal with Iran and also supports a “two state solution” involving the Palestinians.

That’s the roadmap I see laid out.

“I think Saudi Arabia and Israel are working together on Iran with Syria being a pathway to that end and that cooperation will continue after Iran is dealt with.”

Cooperation has been ongoing between Israel and the Saudis for some time, but only unofficially through back channels and on the QT. It will continue after Iran, but only after the Saudis angrily and loudly denounce Israeli aggression. The official reality and the truth are often and necessarily at odds in the Middle East.

Iran is not happy of Saudi Arabia. A few year ago, over 400 Iranians were killed in the stampede at the Saudi controlled annual pilgrimage to Mecca, the Hajj.
