US President Donald Trump has stirred debate by asking why the American Civil War happened, and pondering whether it could have been "worked out".

In a radio interview, he suggested the conflict might have been avoided if President Andrew Jackson had still been in office.

The 1861-65 Civil War between the northern and southern states was principally caused by slavery.

The Prez is hanging out a red herring. There is something else afoot.

but the fight was over states rights.

again, read the Articles of Secession, principally those of Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia...hint, count the number of times slavery is mentioned in each...

Better check your history. The North made it a very clear policy to NOT invade Kentucky, despite the fact that not doing so significantly hamstrung the war effort in the western theater. Kentucky did not secede, but declared neutrality in the conflict originally. The Federal Government was certainly not happy with this declaration, but recognized that a hostile Kentucky would endanger control of both the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers as well as the western railroads. The North had little choice but to accept Kentucky’s neutrality and base troops in nearby Cairo, IL. Eventually, Kentucky’s neutrality was breached by Cinfederate troops moving to occupy the town of Columbia on the Mississippi to counteract the threat of the Feds at Cairo. Once that occurred, the Feds were free to move in to defend Kentucky from the Confederate invasion.

“Trump stirs debate”

translation:

“Maybe this is something we can use against him.”

Well , if the civil war had not been fought, then America as we know it would not exist. The Confederate states would have been a separate nation ever since. And once the union had been shattered perhaps other regions or states would have seceded too.

Yes we can debate whether the war made sense and whether the loss of life was worth it. But if the war had not been fought, the Confederacy would have been a separate country up till now, presumably.

Really? That’s why the Union invaded Kentucky, right?

Kentucky was trying to remain neutral. Lincoln didn't send any troops into Kentucky until Leonidas Polk took Confederate troops into the state. Look it up.

We should have picked our own cotton.

as with most Civil War discussions on this forum, which generally devolve into disjointed harangues with plenty of nonsense thrown in, there are pearls of wisdom and truth that can be gleaned...your post is one of these...

No, slavery had nothing to do with the war until it was nearly over.

Someone should have told the Southern leaders of the time. They thought it was about slavery.

For those of us who don’t want to argue the issue, is slavery mentioned a lot, or a little?

“The Civil War ended slavery, killed states rights and created a nations of tax serfs ruled by DC.”

I agree with this statement. It ended the horrors of old world slavery and replaced it with a lighter form of slavery.

Kind of ironic that so many northern cities filled with the unassimilated descendants of slaves have turned into complete sh!t-holes in the 150+ years since the Civil War ended.

When I look back over the last few decades and see so many major companies moving to southern states even as the Rust Belt crumbles under decades of corruption and mismanagement, I'd have a hard time believing that the South actually lost the war.

I will respectfully disagree with the author’s statement. Slavery was already dying and on its way out. The war was about States Rights...and had nothing to do with slavery until Lincoln threw that in. It is called the “War of Northern Aggression” for a reason in the South.....red

I would implore you to educate yourself by reading the readily available reasons for secession posted at the time by the seceding states. Therein they make quite clear the primacy of slavery and Northern attitudes toward the institution as their reason for separating. Don't let someone else tell why they said they were leaving. Read it yourself.

It’s mentioned a lot, which of course you already knew...but if you don’t want to argue the issue, why bring it up...?
