Democrats confident they can block Trump’s agenda after spending-bill win
Washington Post ^ | May 1, 2017 | Kelsey Snell and John Wagner

Democrats believe they have set the stage to block President Trump’s legislative priorities for years to come by winning major concessions in a spending bill to keep the government open.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) secured nearly $5 billion in new domestic spending by exploiting disagreements between President Trump and GOP lawmakers over spending priorities.

Democrats’ lopsided victory on the five-month deal, which is likely to be approved this week, means it will be very difficult — if not impossible — for the GOP to exert its will in future budget negotiations, including when it comes to Trump’s 2018 budget blueprint.

“Please be aware that fence, wall, barrier, moat...are all the same thing if they do what is intended.”..”It’s the word “wall” that is being wrongly tossed around.”

Yup, I agree. I’ve been wondering why President Trump doesn’t straight talk about it; then I realized he will use it to give the Rats some political cover when the time comes. I could care less what it is, as long as it works.

It’s not helping him that just getting elected has had a huge impact on border crossings. Wouldn’t surprise me to see him cut some of the freebies that they get, so they will start to self deport

Name one Republican in Congress that has ever stood up to Pelosi and the Democrats.

I'm not relying on Congressional Republicans to stand up to Pelosi and Schumer. That's your first mistake right there. I am relying on Trump to do it which will force the feckless GOP Congress to grow a pair.

And Trump will do it in September, when there's a clean, brand-new budget for Fiscal Year 2018 and all the Obama crap is done and over with. Enough of these CRs. I would rather have the gubmint funded now until the end of the budget year and then we can fight because everything will be on the line then, in September. Not now when NK is on our ass and our military needs to get paid.

Do you have even the slightest clue how many times we’ve heard “We’ll get them next time.” and it’s been a lie every time.

I sincerely hope you are right.

We are on the same side.

“can’t the repubs play the same game as the dems?”

For one thing, President Trump can’t shut the government twice in 5 months. This bill just isn’t worth it politically. Also he has a split GOP. The GOP Reps and Senators in the northern big city states vote like liberals or they don’t get re-elected. That’s the hand President Trump was dealt. Until the voters replace these Rinos with a stronger bread, it will always be an uphill climb.

As a former federal budget officer it is refreshing to find such naive views such as the one you just expressed. By ratcheting up the 2017 baselines, the spending increases become built in. Trump's 2018 cuts won't be to the now higher baseline, but to the rate of increase for 2018.

For your edification, a “cut” in federal parlance is a “decrease” in the rate of increase.

The higher baselines matter very much, but as long as the peasants continue to toil, all is well.

>Trump needs to veto it and shut the whole thing down. (He won’t)

He may. All that needs to happen is the Senate dropping the silent filibuster and Congress can pass a continuing resolution. Trump can threaten to take the entire TOP down if they don’t get in line.

but can be used to repair/upgrade areas where the fencing has failed and can also us it for additional tech tools, all of which had to be done anyway.

No the bill specifically forbids any federal gov spending on the wall. If Trump signs it will be a republican blood bath in 2018.

This isn’t about “next time.” This is about finishing and scrapping Obama’s disastrous legacy by funding it until the new Fiscal Year, when Trump can start his agenda brand new. Why fight now when at the sunrise of the new fiscal year you can completely reshape the size of government. This CR will be done in September.

I believe they are/were looking for proposals for the "wall". They are on the web someplace. A couple of them were awesome. One in particular...and it was indeed impressive fencing.

Pretty cool....but I'm too tired to google.

Trump is going to sign this embarrassing POS otherwise Spicer wouldn’t be spinning it. This BS we’ll fix this in September is an insult. If there was funding for the wall someone from the administration would at least mention it. I think we all underestimated just how Ryan’s gang were in collusion with the Rats NOTHING Trump wanted is in the CR EVERYTHING the Rats wanted is. Disgusting traitors all of em.

Gateway Pundit is just BS clickbait...we already know that the money can be used for fence repairs and tech upgrades/ tools...this is money that would have to be spent anyway.

He did get a huge chunk of change for the military, which bodes well for the next budget...one less battle to fight.

After generations of devolution that has left us where we are, we expect instant results, neglecting that real change will happen gradually and may take generations. I think Trump is right to sign this piece of garbage, because when it comes up again, the Republicans will already be setting their sights on 2018. That will be the time for Trump to play hardball. I mean, its not like he could do any worse with a democrat Congress. At that point, I think Trump should threaten to shut down the government and let the rinos know, he isn’t covering for their relection.

Funny how Putin and even that Idiot Maduro in Venezuela have no problem implementing their agenda and neutralizing their opposition.

Trump talks like a tough guy but there are a lot of communist scumbag criminals still walking around DC scot free and even his own party doesn’t fear or respect him.

This is a game that can’t be won playing by the WASHINGTONIANS RULES.

Trump had better start cracking skulls, they are going to crucify him if he doesn’t come down with an iron fist.
