Women are not mercenary, they are hypergamous. But I dont think that word existed in 1891. I'll bet it did. For sure, these next words did. The quote is usually (probably inaccurately) attributed to the famous late-19th-century psychologist William James (brother of novelist Henry James), upon waking up from a deep sleep:
Higamus, hogamus,
Woman's monogamous.
Hogamus, higamus,
Man is polygamous.
