Used to be the "reporters" would investigate claims themselves.
The complete lack of curiosity tells me the "reporters" are nothing but paid critics.
They are critics - but critics, specifically, of society:SOME writers have so confounded society with government, as to leave little or no distinction between them; whereas they are not only different, but have different origins. Society is produced by our wants, and government by our wickedness; the former promotes our happiness POSITIVELY by uniting our affections, the latter NEGATIVELY by restraining our vices. The one encourages intercourse, the other creates distinctions. The first is a patron, the last a punisher. Those critics are those whom Paine referred to as some writers, and they are socialists (if they werent self-styled objective reporters, they would be self-styled liberals).Society in every state is a blessing, but Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil . . . - Thomas Paine, Common Sense (1776)
They criticize society by reporting bad news exclusively about the people and institutions which make society work. The natural implication of criticizing society is to promote the idea that society needs to be closely controlled. By, naturally, government under the direction of journalists.

To date, neither Trump nor his team has provided evidence to substantiate the claims, but they have promised an investigation.
