Trump’s strategy was a major shift from Obama’s. Obama manly attacked ISIS to drive them into government controlled areas to hurt the Syrian government and the people of Syria. This is why he made very little headway against them in Syria. Trump’s is the classic bottle them and destroy them. He’s read his military history.

IMO Trump has only given Mattis charge to eliminate ISIS, but given him free rein in doing so.
So the neocon Mattis is going to classify everything he wants to do as eliminating ISIS.
Set a trap that allows them to escape in only one direction and destroy them as they flee. Give no quarter.
