Washington (AFP) - President Donald Trump has instructed the Pentagon to "annihilate" the Islamic State group in Syria in a bid to prevent escaped foreign fighters from returning home, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Friday.

Am I missing it? It doesn’t sound like it is talking about our soldiers. But a good question is, why is this our responsibility, you chase them out and 3 years down the road, it may well flare up again. Of course, I respect our leaders, Trump admin at least, to look into the future on this.

What this boils down to, is that the field commanders are authorized to exercise full discretion about what tactics will be used in the field, without appealing to higher up in the chain of command when actively engaged with the ISIS jihadists.
No delays on whether to launch or not while waiting for a response from Washington.

The last time I looked....ISIS was moving operations into Yemen and Africa. Annihilation? Just some fake-war act, and Syria just looks ‘fixed’ all of a sudden. Then they set up a full-shop in Yemen and Libya/Tunisia. Course, if they do move into Yemen...it’s just short hop over the border and starting some major conflict in Saudi Arabia. Wonder how that would invite the US to some full-time duty there?
Trump’s strategy was a major shift from Obama’s. Obama manly attacked ISIS to drive them into government controlled areas to hurt the Syrian government and the people of Syria. This is why he made very little headway against them in Syria. Trump’s is the classic bottle them and destroy them. He’s read his military history.
