Gregg Allman, whose hard-jamming, bluesy sextet the Allman Brothers Band was the pioneering unit in the Southern rock explosion of the 70s, died Saturday due to currently unknown causes. He was 69.
As recently as April 24, reports surfaced claiming Allman was in hospice. His manager previously denied those reports to Variety, which Allman then substantiated in a Facebook post. However, he had suffered a number of ailments in recent years including an irregular heartbeat, a respiratory infection, a hernia and a liver transplant and cancelled many scheduled tour dates in recent months due to undisclosed health reasons.
I’m gonna guess he’ll be buried near his brother, in the same cemetery as Elizabeth Reed.
Blue Sky — one of my all-time faves! Great song, isn’t it?
I was on the concert committee at Mizzou back in 1969 and we brought in some huge big name acts including The Allman Brothers.
Sorry to hear of his passing.
Huge fan, what a bummer.
RIP, Gregg. Enjoy your reunion with your big brother, you’ve both got some catching up to do.
RIP to a rock legend.
Wow, another huge 70’s icon gone. Bummer...
I have been a fan for almost 45 years. I probably have worn out “Live at the Fillmore East” and “Eat a Peach” in all formats and I never get tired of listening to them.
At the time I think they were unique and the original Jam Band.
Duane and Barry left way too soon right when success came and Gregg and the rest tried to soldier on. Too many drugs and too much booze but they persevered and had a great run.
Gregg was multi-talented and when you listened to him sing it was unlike anyone else. They played a style of Jazz-Blues Fusion that was very much their own, only other person that comes to mind that played like that was John Mayall.
So God Speed Gregg and thanks for all the memories and countless hours of blissful music entertainment.
Ahh the 60’s.
Sex Drugs and Rock and Roll.
One of’ems gone get’cha
His Mother died within the last two or three years and they were close so I imagine he will be buried next to her, wherever that is.
An old cowboy I knew said it is not the miles you travel that wear you out, it is all the stops you made that gets you.
And I didn’t see it but Cher was just on some show I heard wearing a very skimpy outfit.
Back in the ‘60s, quite a few country and soul music stars died young, even younger actually, maybe it was bad diet, smoke filled rooms and alcohol I thought.
A great talent and saddened.
I just checked Fina A Grave. Duane and Barry are buried next to each other at Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon. Gregg’s Mother. Geraldine, died in 2015 and is buried there also and I assume Gregg will be buried next to her. Will be an interesting funeral.
Maybe it's me but it seems that the music always sounds better after the artist dies. I spent the last week listening to Soundgarden/Chris Cornell stuff and it's pretty good. I don't remember it sounding that good when Cornell was alive.
Same with Bowie. I started listening to his later albums after he died. They sounded pretty good.
Darn cancer again. Dad is in hospice not sure if he will last to Father,s day. 79 is not a good age to leave either.
I blame it on Cher...
Married to Cher. Talk about tied to the whipping post.
Yes, Rose Hill Cemetary is where the “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” headstone is. I gotta admit, even after all the recent deaths, this one shakes me up a little. So many memories. I remember the first time I heard “Blue Sky”. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”
Condolences to family and friends of Greg Allman. R.I.P., sir. Thanks.
love
“I had a beer with Gregg Allman one time many many moons ago.”
I “sort of” had an encounter.. Back in my early 20’s , must have been, ‘84-ish, at a bottle club in Bradenton Fl (yes, I was a bit of a party animal back then). My roomate and I plopped quarters down on the pool table. He was up first and by the time he played, it was against no other then Gregg Allaman. Roomnate won the game so I ended up playing him and not Gregg..lol I was too chckin s*** to chat with him later in the night...
BTW, Dickey Betts also lived in that area (Google “27.410348, -82.578342”) Use to have keg parties in high school ‘78-’80 timeframe at the island behind his house.. I know he hated that, as he would shoot off his shotgun (I assume into the air) if anyone ventured onto his property while getting to the island where someone had a dingy to shuttle back anbd forth... That house across the street was empty field back then where the ding operation was done..hehe
Saw a photo of Allman with heavy tattooing on his arms. Wonder if he contracted hep C from a tattoo needle.
I think many aren't aware of the risks they take when they get tattooed (aside from making their skin permanently ugly). All under the illusion that tattoos will make them look cool.
He said himself that he wasn’t a Southern Rocker. Rock IS southern...he was a ROCK pioneer.
