In most situations, there is a better parenting option than spanking. However, in all situations, parenting is better than not parenting. If you don’t know how else to discourage a child’s misbehavior, spanking is better than ignoring bad behavior.

If we’re talking about black families or single parent black families, we’re talking vicious beatings not spanking. Bill Cosby - I know, I know - spoke out about this for years.

My wife and I used time out effectively when children were young. One minute for each year old was the formula. Often they begged for a spanking because it was quicker.

As they got older and began to enjoy time outs we moved on to more creative punishment, like turning off the internet.

The video is 63 minutes long.

How did you watch it so fast?

In my opinion, spanking, when applied as a judicious swat or two to get the child’s attention is an appropriate last option for young children. It is a major emphasis - usually employed when a question of safety is involved.

It should be rare, and never devolve into beatings.

Just walking from the school bus to my front door somehow lowered their IQ.

The go-to Bible quote for child abusers.

The Bible the wisdom of the Creator.

One small swat on the diaper of a child in the terrible twos is like an immunization. Never have to do it again usually.

Big difference between discipline and abuse - not sure if you are saying the Bible helps those who want to beat their kids or if it was tongue in cheek.....anyone can twist the meaning of anything to "justify" bad behavior or even to slam productive behavior. Those on the Left who think killing/looting/rioting are valid forms of expression could have benefited greatly from early discipline.

Have to bow to your expert knowledge on that one.

For the rest of us, it's plain common sense. It's child-abuse not to discipline your child.

I’m simply saying that if you take that quote in isolation and at face value (its most common usage), it justifies virtually any level of violence against children. There’s nothing in that quote to discourage beating a kid within an inch of his life on a regular basis and claiming it’s a form of love.

That sober, responsible parenting fantasy of measured spankings in only appropriate and necessary circumstances is a fiction. It never happens like that in the real world.

It happens that way all the time in the real world - I was disciplined (not beaten) and same with my children. Used way more words than physical punishment and was able to transfer to only words/discussions at very early ages.

I suppose those who have been abused might make a case, but the concept/principle is sound - for sane and moral people.

The existence of evil doesn't negate the principles of establishing a civil society.
