Wow!
Looking at the list: Lou Gehrig. Willie Mays. Mike Schmidt. Scooter Gennett. Good for him.
More amazing given that Gennett hits a HR only about every 38 ABs in 3-4 seasons. That’s about 16 HRs for a 600 AB season.
That would be called ‘having a little pop’ but not close to being a slugger. And he’s a small guy by MLB standards.
Best single game performance I’ve seen
Mickey Mantle too. I think Mickey had a 5-homer game which is the record. I’ll have to check.
History?
Maybe but ain’t it fun to watch!?!
Nota-Bene...I’m a Tigers fan.
A St Louis Cardinal hit two grand slams in one inning, 1999. Fernando Tatis. Career shortened by injuries.
Im a Tigers fan.
Lifer here:)
Fidrych “the bird” is an MLB hero!
Too bad they (the Tigers) used him up in the “cold” of April of 1977.
I believe Schmidt got his 4 in a crazy April 1979 22-20 game at Wrigley Field. Dave Kingman hit 3. There was a 25 or 30 MPH wind blowing out to left field.
This kid had a pretty good night. It happens.
I remember Freddie Patek - slap-hitter, 5 foot nothing, a hundred and nothing - putting three out over the Big Green Monster in one game at Fenway when I was a kid. When you're hot, you're hot.
Agree on the Bird, my forever moment was Dave Bergmans 3 and 2 3 run homer on his 13th pitch with 2 out to win the game,i about jumped out of my skin on that hit!
You're thinking of Mike Cameron... I think he still is the only player to have additional at bats after hitting his 4th HR of the game (he hit 4 HRs in the first 5 innings). He was HBP in his 5th AB and hit it to the warning track in RF in his 6th AB.
If Lou or Tommy or Casey or Billy are manager of the Cardinals, the only thing Scooter hits after his second homerun is the deck.
Myself?
I will constantly play Gibsons HR for the Dodgers in 1988, wearing #23 (Willie Horton’s number!).
He literally THROWS the bat at the pitch and it “goes yard”! He stiffs ^The Eck^ and makes history.
Yes, on the Bird. In college went to his opening days. Was fun.
Most surprising Tiger hit I ever saw was little mainly single hitting second baseman Lou Wittaker (of the Trammel Wittaker combination) hit one over the roof, over the rooft at the old Tiger Stadium. Had been done a few times before, but all by big guys.
I heard him say after the game he had been 0-19 at bat prior.
What I love about watching that clip (especially with Vin Scully's call) is looking out beyond the Right Field Pavilion and seeing the brake lights light up on the cars of the people who left early, right as Vin says "She is gone!"
My best Tiger memory from “The Stadium on Cork Street”?
1972.
Willie Horton getting the “green light” from Martin vs. the Angels in the 8th.
Bases loaded (Cash/Northrup/Rodriguez?)
...0-2...he hits a “dinger” about 2 rows in front of me in the cheap-seats of left field. Tigers win.
My continued critique of the Tiger franchise (as well the Lions) is that they tend to “give away” franchise players for a minimal profit.
Loss-leader ideology?
