There is almost universal bewilderment over President Trump raising the possibility that his conversations with James Comey were captured by a recording system he had installed in the White House. Memories immediately turn to the experience of President Nixon with White House tapes being subpoenaed. That did not end well for Nixon, and raising the possibility that Trump White House conversations could be subject to subpoenas – perhaps from a Democrat-controlled House of Representatives in 2019 – has both friends and foes of the president scratching their heads.

why wouldn’t they be taped? I assumed all conversations in the White House are taped or bugged by foreign government. Isn’t that why Trump goes away to Mar Lago a lot?

...because, as someone said here yesterday, Trump knows Comey recorded the conversation, but the recordings were confiscated from Comey’s possession.
President Trump has knowledge of them, he does not HAVE them. Big difference. Besides wouldn’t the President be wise to record such conversations and those in the room should assume such?
I would think Trump may have said that so that Comey would think twice about lying. If I were up there I would tell Shiff, or whatever his name is, to demand in one hand and sh!t in the other, then get back to me as to which hand filled up faster.
I may be way off base here but a lot of people think Trump has known he was under surveillance by the deep State agencies since well before the election.
Then of course we know Obama changed it so that all agencies can share.
And also who knows what was going on with Comey and what they might have found in his office since he didn’t have a chance to clean it up.
In other words I think there is a deeper game being played here whatever it is.
Nobody seems to remember THIS: At the very first meeting between Comey and Trump; Comey insisted that EVERYONE ELSE leave the room; that ONLY he and Trump be in the room. Now the lying bahstid testifies under oath that he never wanted to be alone with Trump. It made him nervous.

I don’t think Trump taped anything but is rather using the mere possibility as a threat to those who would be tempted to lie about things he said behind closed doors.
Ever the master negotiator and strategist, Pres Trump put just enough doubt in Comey that he had to tell something resembling the truth. If they don’t exist, the libs will scream “he lied and must be impeached”. To which I (as Trump) would counter... “I said HOPE they weren’t recorded”. Which is a statement not a lie (there’s that “H” word again). T’was a brilliant strategy. Trump vs media/libs, is not a fair fight! Man against girly pajama boys. LOL!

President Trumps own security caught those FISA warrant electronic surveils as soon as they were turned on and they were actively used against whomever were listening from the second they were placed and turned on.
Trump knows exactly what was said and recorded by them because it was all scripted to do exactly what it has done.

Comey is such a wuss. Are there tapes of Comey and Hillary? I can just see Comey grovelling at her feet.
When discussing Watergate, the very existence of a taping system is usually noted as a sign of Nixon’s paranoia. Few reveal that in truth at least some taping was done by every president from Franklin D. Roosevelt through Nixon.
