I wouldn't say that is true at all. There was a time when America had no welfare state and needed workers in a highly productive industrial society. The USA went post industrial and now we need ZERO immigration. Immigration of all kinds needs to stop for many decades if the USA is to survive.

I wondered what ever became of Bret Stephens. His column disappeared from the WSJ a few weeks ago. He was an early, ardent and committed Trump hater. It looks like he landed where he’ll be right at home. I never realized he was this much of a loon, though....

First, I question his statistics. What are the actual numbers, and where did he get them?
Second, he makes no allowance for race, social or economic status. Divide his categories on those parameters and the results would not look the same.
Third, as the son of a father whose family has been in Maryland for 300 years, and a mother whose parents were foreign-born, how would he classify me, and those like me? Am I a child of immigrants (well, grand-child), or the scion of an old nativist line (may even be some Native America Indians in that line, too)?

If Bret (glad he left WSJ, although they’ve gone pretty left lately) wrote the article with “Legal” or “Illegal” preceding every “Immigrants”, as appropriate, the article would completely fail to make a coherent point.
