Most of his 'nastiness' is a myth perpetuated by a single writer who despised him.
His contemporaries viewed him as as good guy who was very competitive.
That seems to be a myth.... Cobb’s reputation was smeared by one hostile early biographer looking to make a sensation. Cobb’s contemporaries seemed to regard him as a tough but fair competitor who they esteemed most highly. Allegations that he was especially nasty or racist compared to other ballplayers of his era have been discredited.
