SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The Illinois Senate voted to override Gov. Bruce Rauner's vetoes of a $36 billion budget package Tuesday, including a $5 billion tax increase designed to start digging out of the nation's longest budget crisis since at least the Great Depression.

The Democratic-controlled chamber completed its work within 30 minutes of the Republican governor's vetoes, sending the package back to the House for an override vote that would give Illinois its first annual budget since 2015.

“Moreover, this budget package holds K-12 school funding across Illinois hostage to force a bailout of Chicago Public Schools. Hidden in this budget are terms that withhold school funding unless the school funding formula is rewritten to shift money from suburban and downstate school districts to CPS.”

Wow, downstate will get really screwed.

The next thing they have to try to do is close the borders and not let anyone out. Then they have to send the Mafia’s Spec Forces into other states to abduct taxpaying businessmen to reinstall them in Chicago.

Death spiral, especially with sensible states like Wisconsin and Indiana right next door.

Actually, Rauner will get the blame. They'll make up some story that he didn't want to compromise with Madigan on a long-term budget, so Madigan and the Dems had to present something that would keep the state solvent for a few more years.

Same thing the Dems did to Schwarzenegger in CA. Arnold compromised with the Dems and they still blame him today for CA's sorry financial state. This is why it is absolutely stupid for Republicans to try and work with Dems. You set your agenda in no uncertain terms, and if you lose, you lose. But then the people get the government they deserve and will wake up to this fact. Rauner on Day One should have came out of the gate with a list of spending cuts and educating the IL masses that structural changes are needed to keep the state solvent.

Arnold is the reason only Dems run in that state. He and his buddy, forget the name passed that global warming cap and trade tax.

Arnold reduced the sentence of his pals son. That boy murdered a fine young man.

Arnold married a Kennedy....he never should have been trusted. I voted for him, lived in the state then.

Arnold is a major pile.

I think there is still a snowballs chance in hell that the house will close ranks and uphold the veto. The democrats abandoned talks Friday evening and dropped 1200 pages in two bills on the republicans that thought they were still negotiating in good faith. The bonds will still go to junk more taxpayers will flee and the delusional democrats will continue to stuff their pilfered plunder into the bloated pockets of their fat man pants.

Even if the gods of Mt Olympus that rule Illinois could comprehend the white hot ire that awaits them back home just outside their guilded communities they would only delight all the more.
