Earth could turn into a hothouse planet like Venus, with boiling oceans and acid rain, if humans don't curb irreversible climate change, physicist Stephen Hawking claimed in a recent interview.

"We are close to the tipping point, where global warming becomes irreversible. Trump's action could push the Earth over the brink, to become like Venus, with a temperature of 250 degrees [Celsius], and raining sulfuric acid," he told BBC News, referring to the president's decision to pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate deal.

That is nearly 2 ORDERS of magnitude greater than Earth.... or 100 times as much sheer MASS!

So earth’s atmosphere needs to GAIN almost 100X as much MASS

Gee Hawking...... You can;t just create matter OUT OF NOTHING!!!!

He should stick to the fabric of space time because boyles law and basic planetary science is beyond him.

[ I’ve never bought this notion that Steven Hawking is the most brilliant man on Earth. I think it arose more from the novelty of his being a noted physicist while also suffering from a severe handicap, which provided many the opportunity to display their “enlightenment” by making him a hero.

Based upon his absurd statement about Earth vs. Venus, he may have just ironically demonstrated himself to be one of the dumbest people on the planet. ]

500 million years ago, as Earth recovered from its “snowball” phase, and most plant life began to evolve, CO2 reached 5,000 parts per million, which is more than 12X the current rate.

Also, 20,000 years ago, as Earth began to warm from the most recent Ice Age, CO2 was at a record low of 200 parts per million.

Most biologists agree that a rate of 150 parts per million would kill off most plant life, which would kill off most herbivore animals, which would kill off most carnivore animals.

You may as well add to that... Over time the earth will eventually spin further and further away from the Sun. In fact, every year we move 15 centimetre’s further away. Our chances of turning into an ice planet are much more credible than our chances of turning into a hothouse.

Sure could, ... in about 1.1 billion years, a mere blip in numbers Idiot Savant Hawking calculates in his head daily.

It looks like Hawking will need air conditioning for his wheelchair as he observes the Sun, a Main Sequence Star, go through it's Red Giant phase.

Approximately 1.1 billion years from now, the Sun will be 10% brighter than it is today. This increase in luminosity will also mean an increase in heat energy, one which the Earth’s atmosphere will absorb. This will trigger a runaway greenhouse effect that is similar to what turned Venus into the terrible hothouse it is today.

In 3.5 billion years, the Sun will be 40% brighter than it is right now, which will cause the oceans to boil, the ice caps to permanently melt, and all water vapor in the atmosphere to be lost to space. Under these conditions, life as we know it will be unable to survive anywhere on the surface, and planet Earth will be fully transformed into another hot, dry world, just like Venus.

The amount of energy required to do that is what? Surely this “scientist” can calculate that - I don’t know how. And where will this energy come from?
