Marijuana Shortage Prompts Emergency In Nevada; Tax Officials Weigh Changes

Sales of recreational marijuana have blown past expectations in Nevada, threatening to leave some dispensaries with empty shelves. After Gov. Brian Sandoval endorsed a statement of emergency in the first week of legal sales, regulators are looking to bolster the supply chain.

The Nevada Tax Commission is meeting Thursday to determine whether the state has enough wholesale marijuana distributors; it could also adopt emergency regulations.

"Right now, only companies that are also licensed to distribute liquor in Nevada are able to bring marijuana to dispensaries," Nevada Public Radio's Casey Morell reports for NPR's Newscast unit. "The dispensaries say that's why they're running out of the drug."

Nevada opened the retail pot market on July 1. The state has 47 licensed stores, and in the first weekend of sales, "well over 40,000 retail transactions" were carried out, tax officials say. Some retailers said they racked up twice as many sales as they had estimated — and they also reported a dire need for new deliveries to restock their shelves.

What we see happening should cause some rethinking of the idea of decentralizing some federal programs to the states.

So screw the 10th Amendment when you don't like the results.

I would rather a few states are screwed up - than the entire govt.

I agree, and I am glad you chimed in. I started then decided not to go down that path in my earlier post, but your comment is a good segway...

Those states that fail, act as signposts for what NOT to do.

That used to be the case. It seems like today failure is almost the objective if it increases the pool of dependents, redistributes worker wealth to a welfare motivated voter base, and keeps the elite in their mansions and lavish style.

Look at CA. Billions wasted on illegals, social programs, trains to nowhere, while roads and schools are failing. Do politicians care? Does Jerry Brown care? No, they are getting there piece of the pie. Does a welfare dependent electorate care? No, its not their money. If it was just a few states, then good people could relocate to responsible states or theoretically the failed states politicians find themselves voted out. But in too many states it seems like this failed thinking is prevailing.

Oh boy, another batch of glossy brochures littering every elevator floor, every signpost, every countertop in Sin City!

24 hour chapels, escort services, casinos, and now pot shops.

Sodom and Gomorrah were pikers...

NBA Summer League is currently in Las Vegas. Nevada is having a marijuana shortage. I’m sure the two have nothing to do with each other...

It’s only an emergency because the pot shortage has interrupted one of Nevada’s revenue streams.
