Yes it’s stupid. Some people however are predisposed to addiction. It’s always been that way always. Like casinos and liberalism, it’s hyper exploitation.
Whew. Harsh words there. This isn’t an article, it’s a manifesto.
Clearly also written by someone without any knowledge of addictions.
Aside from the overdosing, how do these people take this stuff without getting SUPER constitpated?
The main problem with this is that the drugs coming in from China are so lethal that they endanger even the police who can receive a lethal dose by just brushing against it accidentally in the course of their duties.
OP clearly doesn’t know jack about the issue. Disposable article as it’s shallow answers attempting to address deep water.
I agree with the author. In my area, addicts are overdosing in parking lots and public restrooms. I think it’s because they think they are sure to be found and given Narcan. This is premeditated and a conscious decision on their part.
My opinion? First overdose, bring them back and mandate that they have to go through addiction treatment. Second overdose - revive and give them a year jail sentence in a facility for addicts. Third overdose - grant them their final wish and let them die. It is merciful at that point - to the addict and their family. I know that sounds harsh, but I don’t think the taxpayer should be required to continually bail them out.
I remember the good old days before the explosion in opiod prescriptions when use was limited to the inner cities and nobody gave a crap.
Legalize it, pile it as high as an elephants eye, the problem solves itself.
Right? The Chinese have NO REASON to hold a grudge against the English for the Opium Wars. All they had to do was say NO!
You are the biggest idiot I’ve seen on here in a while. It’ll be a damn shame when someone Close to You drops dead from opoid abuse. I’ll be crying. But you sound like such a piece of *** you probably wouldn’t care and say they deserved that.
The first opiod usage may be prescribed for pain and then the person gets hooked.
As an alcoholic, I know first hand the pain and misery that my series of falling into the pit has caused other people.
If you've never been addicted to any substance or behavior, thank your God because you are fortunate, and rare.
I make no excuse nor justify any of my bad behavior on my disease, because at some point it is/was a choice.
But it is very easy to pontificate from high atop your horse of righteousness, be careful, the fall from a high horse, can damage your self image, Mr. Perfect.
Self righteous, sanctimonious pr*ck..
“You want to pay EMTs to drop everything and come the rescue of repeat overdoses just as they do with heart attacks, strokes, and other ills that flesh is heir to? Not with my tax money you don’t.”

So, what’s next? What treatment gets excluded because someone doesn’t like the victim’s life choices. .
First Responder: “OK guys, back to the station. This car accident victim’s blood alcohol content is over the limit. Forget about him. PACK UP AND MOVE OUT! Maybe we can still catch the last round of Pat and Vanna. Last one to the station washes dishes.”

First Responder: “OK guys, back to the station. This heart attack victim is a fatty. He obviously doesn’t care about himself. PACK UP AND MOVE OUT! Maybe we can still catch the last round of Pat and Vanna.” Last one to the station washes dishes.”

First Responder: “OK guys, back to the station. This hemorrhaging abortion victim has had two previous abortions Forget about her. PACK UP AND MOVE OUT! Maybe we can still catch the last round of Pat and Vanna. Last one to the station washes dishes.”

First Responder: “OK guys, back to the station. This old guy is just too old. Forget about his stroke PACK UP AND MOVE OUT! Maybe we can still catch the last round of Pat and Vanna. Last one to the station washes dishes.”
Funny how both parties have for years wanted lessen penalties for black crackheads & dealers, but suddenly have found evil white druggies they want to punish. Generally, something evil is going on when both parties agree.
Looks a lot like a cloward piven stratagem. Doctors are in the employ/under the direction of governmenty regulations. Write tons of scrips for opioid pain killers and voila...a new epidemic.
just spitballing...

Do not touch that stuff unless you have strong will power and if you find yourself taking it despite not being in pain, check into rehab right away. That stuff is no joke.
What about the people who don’t know they’re on opioids because the medical industry hides that fact with clever drug names? And blaming people for following doctor’s orders is kind of a dick move, doctors are supposed to help us.
People are looking at this article from two different POV’s.
1. A common street addict. Some punk using opoids just to get high. The consensus is - they deserve little to no mercy.
2. A loved one dealing with excruciating pain. Through no fault of their own, they were prescribed legal narcotics that lead to their addiction. They deserve all the kindness and mercy in the world.
Then there are the “eff ‘em. Legalize all drugs and let ‘em die” crowd. These people are the sickest of all.
I am a big fan of opioids for terminal disease. If you have cancer and less than six months to live, I don't care if you get addicted. Opioids are used far too little in that situation. Drug them up until the pain is gone if that's what the patient wants.
For all other applications though, I am very skeptical of opioids. I went through three months of severe pain that was poorly treated rather than take opioids. I took that pretty little pill one time and loved it way too much - I was not going to spend months on something that strong and pleasurable.
I feel sorry for those who get addicted. I also blame physicians who are reckless with those drugs (except in terminal illness). We know opioids are addictive, and we know many people are weak. It's irresponsible to put so many people into that situation.
I’m from the Southwest Ohio area (where Middletown is located). The article has a harsh edge to it, but in reality, Middletown is a depressed rust belt town with a lower middle and lower class population and a shrinking tax base. It has plenty of unhealthy residents who are not opioid addicts that already stress the very limited resources of their EMTs. Reality is they must limit, prioritize and strategically allocate their resources. Who gets treated first - the obese chain smoking disabled senior citizen or the white trash loser on his third overdose?
