A large piece of scrap metal fell from a truck that lost control and overturned on an overpass of a Florida highway, crashing onto a car below and nearly crushing its driver, authorities said.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the truck loaded with scrap metal was traveling westbound from the State Road 528 exit ramp onto Interstate 4 in Orange County on Saturday morning when its driver lost control and struck the guardrail. The truck flipped over, causing a large metal object it had been carrying to fly off the overpass and fall directly on top of a vehicle below that was exiting Interstate 4.

The scrap metal smashed in the roof of the car on the driver's side, authorities said. But the driver, 36-year-old Jesus Armando Escobar of Orlando, miraculously survived and suffered only minor injuries.

Yes, that guy was very lucky. About 20 years ago, near where I live, a truck loaded with large rocks tilted on a curved overpass. The rocks crushed a car below in which an 8-month pregnant woman was driving to a doctor’s appt for a prenatal check up. She and the baby were killed (hopefully instantly). Every time I approach that overpass, I look up for big trucks and say a prayer for that woman and her unborn child.

I have been through that interchange many times over the years. The 528 overpass on I-4 has always been dodgy because of its angle and curve.

Some of these trucks that I’ve seen in Florida are junkers with bulging sides. I followed a landscaping truck towing a trailer filled with mulch and it spewed the mulch all the way across a long bridge. They seem to be lax in making sure loads are secure. On another occasion a landscaping truck spit out a 40 gallon plastic barrel right in front of me and I had to swerve to avoid it.

Damn it!

That is one man saved by God and luck.

That pipe is about 5’ long and 24-30” in diameter iron and easily 500 or 600#.

The survival of that man is nothing short of a miracle.

I think your weight estimates are most likely on the light side.

A friend of mine was driving on 75 in Dallas and a semi in front of him threw a wheel and it bounced and landed in his back seat behind him totaling his car. He walked away. 1 foot shorter and he would have been smooshed. There is a God.
