As a former newspaper columnist, yes, the AP Style Manual (version whatever) WAS the “Gutenberg” to be followed.
Even in ‘writing schools’, which I am a graduate of, the AP Manual was one of those ‘must buy’ reference books for the taught courses. My mentor was a former chief editor of a Philly ‘paper, so ‘the style’ became rote.
AP = Always Propaganda
They try to hide it, but it is still there for those who are aware.
There are no Journalist allowed, only Press-titutes. (they do it for the money)
There sre enough people out there that can’t read between the lines so phrasing and word usage can easily lead them astray.
I have a daughter in journalist school. The AP style book is still being used and required.
In my former life as a journalist and editor I found most are inspired by their own gigantic egos.

I’ve never worked in that industry, but would agree with you for the larger companies.
I was involved in local politics a few times. Over the years, I met a handful of “reporters” who were bright, honest, and pursued the truth. I really admired them. Even a few editors.
But the odd are really, really bad.
I’ve never had a government job. I did serve as a city councilman in at town of 10K people once. It paid $0. Felt it was important, but that was long ago, prior to 1986.
I’ve been an “observer” since the mid 1970’s. Some interest before that but it takes far too much time to stay on top of this.

That is why novelist Mickey Spillane always made sure to use no more than a two-syllable word in his stories!!
I see that they banned the term “illegal aliens”. I haven’t heard illegal aliens referred to as such in many years.
Words and language used to describe people and situations matter. Which is why the liberals at AP go to such great lengths to control the language used.

I did not think it would be retired, but revised manifold.
My ‘writing school’ was not a ‘journalist’ school, just either ‘fiction’ or ‘non-fiction’. I chose ‘fiction’, had a smattering of submissions in various first-generation websites, but wrote ‘non-fiction’ for over 6 years in a regional newspaper.
(My being published was the only payment I received, and that was a Gannett paper.)
The AP, like all leftist liberals, lives in a fairy world filled with unicorns and Skittles.
The AP is about as far from reality and common sense as you can get.

Presumably, whoever composed that stylebook has graduated from J-school. One would also presume that, because of that, the composer would know that “gender” is a grammatical term, and has absolutely nothing to do with an individual’s sex, either genetically or attitudinally. But, one would presume too much, I see...
