Say Goodbye To X+Y: Should Community Colleges Abolish Algebra?
NPR ^ | July 19, 2017 | Kayla Lattimore and Julie Depenbrock

Algebra is one of the biggest hurdles to getting a high school or college degree — particularly for students of color and first-generation undergrads.

It is also the single most failed course in community colleges across the country. So if you're not a STEM major (science, technology, engineering, math), why even study algebra?

You’re right. With algebra it’s simply remember the rules.

“And there is only one right answer.”

Don’t forget the negative solution to the quadratic polynomial :P

The study of abstract mathematics develops critical and abstract thinking skills as well as the ability to correctly construct syllogisms.

It doesn’t surprise me that liberals would want to do away with it.

Algebra is about teaching the non-college bound how to make change.

Today's cash registers already do this for them. In fact, they don't even have to read anymore, just push the button with the picture of the food on it.

When one has a warped idea of what equality means, of course Algebra is hard!
Bring back Geometry and Latin!

A == A + 1 is not a mathematical statement. The student was correct when he said a = a +1 is impossible. The teacher was wrong.

They used to say this about Calculus. I bet they do not require Calculus anymore.

Grades 1-12 a failing to prepare the kids in Math. Instead of 2 pages of problems for HW, you get one problem where they are concerned about “strategies” to how to solve it.

My 20 year old son is a victim of this as he flunked out of college due to Algebra and Pre-Clac. Even the Private HS was no help as that was why I moved him out of a decent suburban Public School so they kid was have a chance at least. You do have to study however.

In Asia, algebra is a mandatory middle school subject. The fact that American college students can’t pass it raises the question of whether they should even be in college.

And why is that?

Actually, I tested with a high IQ and was lousy at math in general. I did like Geometry for some weird reason but even there I only got mediocre grades. I always froze on tests for some reason.

...Linear Algebra was my downfall.

It was the only textbook I threw away after completing the course. It didn't help that the TAs went on strike that semester and I had to try to teach myself.

Maybe we should just kill all subhumans who are forced to use calculators.

Engineers must be chiming in on this thread. Some of the most obnoxious people on FR in the ego dept.

Admittedly most people will never use it in their daily lives....but seriously? It’s about more than just math.

That’s why I always liked math. There’s only one right answer. Common core is trying to remedy that.
