Algebra is, or used to be, a high school course.
That must be one heckuva real “high achiever” college.

“What we’re saying is we want as rigorous a course as possible to determine a student’s ability to succeed, but it should be relevant to their course of study.

I agree completely with this concept...all course requirements should be relevant to a student's course of study, and anything else should be eliminated, like diversity training, gender/ethnic studies, and any other leftist drivel that has no value to a particular degree.

minority students are often motivated to become pop musicians or pro sports players or sell mary kay cosmetics. many of them later in life end up at a trade interview embarrassed by their lack of math skills and passed over for jobs above minimum wage level. while they are students they claim they don’t need math for their chosen but unrealistic goals.

teachers that claim algebra is not needed are often politically correct and math phobic. removing math from requirements mignt affect other classes such as physics and might result in a general dumbing down of those subject curricula.

it seems to me that liberals have a fundamental lack of understanding of compound interest. compound interest understanding is essential to buying a car or a home. it is also essential for investments and retirement planning. yet the liberals vote. algebra is helpful if not necessary for learning compound interest.

I thought algebra was a graduation requirement for high school. WTF?

Seriously, the schools I went to you had to be in algebra 1 by 9th grade.

I hate to be that guy but: if you can’t solve an algebra 1 problem you can’t graduate college (and probably HS too).

It’s true that a large portion of the American people are incapable of working algebra problems because algebra requires “critical thinking,” which the schools all say they stress.

Sorry one more thought. This guy says:

“We want to build bridges between the kinds of math pathways we’re talking about that will allow them to continue into STEM majors. “

A STEM major who can’t do algebra?? Huh? Like what?

If they were being asked to solve y″ + p(t) y′ = g(t), I would say they have an argument.

Instead of increasing the quality of primary and secondary education the liberals' solution is to dumb things down even further.

Rates of failure in algebra are higher for minority groups than they are for white students.

By "minorities" are we talking exclusively about American blacks? Because I'm pretty sure the rest of the "minorities" are doing just fine in algebra.

Easy solution, bring back vocational schools! The complaint is that the Community College is educating, not training. Do. The. Math!

One doesn’t need “Black/Ethnic/Gender ‘Studies’” either to get a job . .

But let’s see this professor (or anyone) advocate dropping those

First of all, we’ve seen in the data from many of the pilots across the country that are using alternative math pathways — that are just as rigorous as an algebra course — we’ve seen much greater success for students because many of these students can relate to these different kinds of math depending on which program of study they’re in. They can see how it works in their daily life and how it’s going to work in their career. …

Quontavius spends his monthly 'reparations' check on Popeye's and crack. Latrina, his baby momma, needs needs new spinners on the Lincoln. If a set of spinners cost $2000, how many five dollar tricks and ten dollar rocks must Latrina and Quontavius broker to Diaz, the neighborhood MS-13 steward who just happpens to have a nice set of new spinners in the garage?

Around 1985 I attended an advanced school for Federal Agents in Dallas. There was only a small amount of math involved but we were asked to solve one fairly complex problem involving several moderately difficult calculations.

Nothing like physics but still I was surprised when every agent turned in their answer and the instructors announced that every singe person got it right.

Now that was around 20 people and standards were pretty tough back then.

I have a feeling that many in a similar class today would not get it.

UAB required you to have a ‘C’ or higher in Algebra for it to count towards graduation. I failed it once, dropped it once, made a ‘D’ in it twice. So, the fifth time I took it, I made a ‘B.’ So that being said, they can all take it Five times just like I did, but dumbing down the degree is not helping anyone.
