The Global Times also cited reports that the Pentagon has prepared plans for B-1B strategic bombers to make preemptive strikes on North Korea's missile sites, and a strongly worded ultimatum from Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis that North Korea should not consider “actions that would lead to the end of its regime and destruction of its people.”
The paper’s comments also reflect the 1961 Sino-North Korean Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance, which obliges China to intervene if North Korea is subject to unprovoked aggression — but not necessarily if Pyongyang starts a war.
“The key point is in the first half of the sentence; China opposes North Korea testing missiles in the waters around Guam,” said Cheng Xiaohe, a North Korea expert at Renmin University of China in Beijing.
With the situation on the Korea Peninsula sliding dangerously toward the point of no return, Chinese media are starting to declare their positions on any potential war, he said. “Secondly, in a half-official way, China is starting to review and clarify the 1961 treaty.”
China has become deeply frustrated with the regime in Pyongyang, and genuinely wants to see a denuclearized Korean Peninsula. But it has always refused to do anything that might destabilize or topple a regime which has long been both ally and buffer state.
That’s because Beijing does not want to see a unified Korean state allied to the United States right up against its border: indeed, hundreds of thousands of Chinese soldiers died during the 1950-53 Korean War to prevent that happening.

We should kill litte Kim and reunite the Koreas. There is no reason for them to be apart. We should absolutely do that but then stand aside along with China. No invasions, no “take overs”, no nothing. Just let them be one again.
Actually I think, as usual, WasPos has the wrong take. China sad if the US takes any pre-emotive action they will back NK.
China has been using NK to tweak the US my entire lifetime. Now the temper tantrums are getting harder for China to control. China has cut off the natural gas pipeline and is turning Nork ships away but its not working like it used to.
China will not allow a unified Korea.
That’s why they have propped up the Kim regimes.
Message to China:
You’re COMPLETELY responsible for any actions taken by NK.
The Chinese statement was not completely clear. What will they consider a first move? They don’t want pro western regime change, but they can’t really “stop” bombers and cruise missiles at least not initially.
In the mean time “Fat Boy” gets to talk as much smack as he wants while he hides behind his momma.
Wink, wink.
Move some nukes into South Korea and see if China gets serious about this destabilization of the region.
A sane regime in North Korea would immediately start trying to tie itself economically into the Korean Miracle to its south. China dose not want a rational government in North Korea, even one nominally allied with China and a rational government in Norkea allied with China would be only nominally so or it would not be a rational government. A prospering and thus pro Western North Korea is as bad for Chinese sensibilities as a unified Korea formally allied with the USA.
John Bolton agrees with the WaPo take on this matter (just heard on Varney & Co on Fox Business).

NK has brainwashed three generations of their citizens.
They’d be lost in a SK free market society.
The solution is to replicate the Austrian State Treaty in Korea.
China will not give up Kim without something of value in exchange. Fighting them both is a terrible idea.
China just wants our troops gone from the peninsula. If the Norks are taken out, I’ll make that deal.
If they have been brain washed to well then he wouldn’t need the extreme security measures to ensure compliance that he has.

In a heartbeat. Unified, neutral Korea, no foreign troops or bases, Hyundai, Samsung, and LG pick up the costs associated with rescuing the people of DPRK and rebuilding there.
Any NK who supports Kim get a meal ration.
They like things the way they are just fine.
