The Liberal Crackup
Wall Street Journal ^ | 8/11/2017 | Mark Lilla

Donald Trump’s surprise victory in last year’s presidential election has finally energized my fellow liberals, who are networking, marching and showing up at town-hall meetings across the country. There is excited talk about winning back the White House in 2020 and maybe even the House of Representatives in the interim.

But we are way ahead of ourselves—dangerously so. For a start, the presidency just isn’t what it used to be, certainly not for Democrats. In the last generation, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama won the office with comfortable margins, but they were repeatedly stymied by assertive Republicans in Congress, a right-leaning Supreme Court and—what should be the most worrisome development for Democrats—a steadily growing majority of state governments in Republican hands.

What’s more, nothing those presidents did while in office did much to reverse the rightward drift of American public opinion. Even when they vote for Democrats or support some of their policies, most Americans—including young people, women and minorities—reject the term “liberal.” And it isn’t hard to see why. They see us as aloof, elitist, out of touch.

It is time to admit that American liberalism is in deep crisis: a crisis of imagination and ambition on our side, a crisis of attachment and trust on the side of the wider public. The question is, why? Why would those who claim to speak for and defend the great American demos be so indifferent to stirring its feelings and gaining its trust? Why, in the contest for the American imagination, have liberals simply abdicated?

Ronald Reagan almost single-handedly destroyed the New Deal vision of America that used to guide us. Franklin Roosevelt had pictured a place where citizens were joined in a collective enterprise to build a strong nation and protect each other. The watchwords of that effort were solidarity,

American liberalism in crisis? No sh** Sherlock. Everywhere it’s been implemented it has failed miserably and will continue to do so where liberals wield power.

More like crazy, authoritarian, inflexible and America-hating!

How about this? Even in deep Blue “coastal” areas, either urban or suburban, the failure of Democrat, big-government policy is glaringly obvious. Democrat “leaders” such as DiBlasio (NYC) or Malloy (CT) are complete losers and are sinking their constituencies, and even Democrats admit it. The cognitive dissonance is deafening.

This author is either a delusional maggot or a naive little millennial who never heard of “Ross Perot”.

Bill Clinton never had a popular majority, and barely squeaked out the electoral college.

Comfortable margin my a$$.

“Franklin Roosevelt had pictured a place where citizens were joined in a collective enterprise to build a strong nation and protect each other.”

That’s it. The Democrats don’t believe in the nation, or nationalism. They believe in goverment. When they speak of “the United States” they mean the government. They are empire-builders - what’s mine-is-mine & what’s yours-is-mine. FDR and the New Deal are dead.

“a crisis of imagination and ambition”

They imagine a totalitarian communist state in which they control absolutely everything about YOU.

I wouldn’t call that “a crisis of imagination and ambition”. They have plenty of imagination and ambition.

Americans just disagree with giving up freedom.

The wall street liberal socialists are pissed that President Trump is calling them out on all of their outsourcing, offshoring, and general looting of the US economy.

What a lot of the FRee trader crowd refuse to admit is that wages are actually declining, and inflation is eating a lot of people alive.

A lot of the FRee traders will tell you that imported goods are the cheapest they have ever been. That’s pure bullshit.

I don’t eat LCD TV’s, cell phones, or fuel my vehicle with chinese dog food.

The one thing that both democrats AND republicans come together on is the systematic looting of the US economy.

“Hey! This quarters earnings look great, and all I had to do was run the company into the ground to make that happen”.

Clinton and Obama won a total of four presidential elections — and three of them (1992, 1996 and 2008) were against men who were arguably among the worst presidential candidates in the history of the U.S.

Liberals (both R and D) are undermining the peaceful transition of Power; they want to weaken our President in the eyes of our enemies, destroy the Rule of Law and trample the Constitution underneath their feet.

I patiently await the next “shot heard around the world”.

While true, it still doesn’t invalidate what I said. Even Dole got electoral percentage of a little over 40%, and he was the worst candidate in my lifetime until Hillary ran in 2016.
