Why the American left gave up on political violence
Washington Compost ^ | August 18, 2018 | Yoav Fromer

Posted on 08/19/2017 5:46:11 PM PDT by EdnaMode

President Trump, in part, was right. There is blame to go around for the unrest in Charlottesville. There is fear, intolerance, demonization and growing hatred on both the extreme left and the extreme right. But despite what Trump has claimed, repeatedly, in his public statements since the tragic events there, the willingness to employ organized violence to achieve political goals remains a signature quality of only one side. And it’s not the left.

Extremism on the left is real. It can be seen in attempts to stifle the free speech of conservative speakers on university campuses (as at Middlebury and Berkeley); in the belligerent attitudes toward corporations and capitalism expressed, for instance, by some fringes of the Occupy Wall Street crowd and anti-globalization protesters; and among anti-Zionist movements that peddle conspiracy theories (such as the contention that Jews control U.S. foreign policy) to delegitimize Israel. Yet all of this falls well short of the methodical, organized and strategic violence and incitement embraced by right-wing extremists, whose leaders profess faith in the necessity of the fight. Nothing the left can do today even comes close to that — and hasn’t for decades.

Although the American left was never as fully at ease with revolutionary violence as were its European counterparts (who were reared on Robespierre and Marx), it often took up arms. Labor unions battled constantly with railroad barons, industrial tycoons and mining bosses during the Gilded Age. Even while outnumbered and outgunned, usually by private armies that enjoyed the backing of law enforcement and state militias, workers fought in bloody clashes that left dozens dead on battlefields such as Chicago’s Haymarket Square (1886) and West Virginia’s Blair Mountain (1921).

Fromer can’t even be “Shirley”, let alone serious.

I hate it when johnny-comes-lately writers who weren’t there in the late 60/early 70’s when Marxist violence was in full force, to tell us what the Left didn’t do.

We got lucky. The Weathermen only killed one police officer that we know of, Officer O’Conner in San Francisco, but badly wounded others. Later their successors, the May 19th Communist Organization (with the Black Liberation Army) killed two policemen in Nyack, NY and a Brinks’ truck driver/guard).

The Weathermen committed or claimed to have committed almost 100 bombings across the U.S. and largely escape prosecution due to defective warrants, an great communist underground railroad system that moved them from safe house to safe farm across the US), and “hide in plain sight” strategies (Ayers and Dohrn, among others).

The Black Panthers (a black Marxist expropriation/extortion criminal enterprise with Cuban connections), killed over a dozen policemen and wounded many others. The same for the Maoist Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM), Republic of New Africa (RNA), the Black Liberation Army of Joanne Chesimard aka Shakur (long in Cuba), and a few smaller affinity groups.

What we are seeing now is the unity of both hardcore Marxist/communist groups/parties and the anarchists of the Black Bloc and the Marxist Red Bloc, plus some from Black Lives Matters, the New Black Panther Party, the pro-No. Korean Workers World Party, and a few other smaller groups across the country.

This is known as the “Red-Black Convergence”. It is real. It is national. It is well funded with foundation and Soros money, plus that of rich individual liberals and Marxist professors/writers/activists.

They are the new face of our old communist enemies. Better get used to it. They will be around for a long time unless law enforcement gets off its ass and starts to do some serious intell work on them.

Meanwhile, we should be guarding logical targeted sites (with permission) and help out the locals in apprehending the terrorists (and if they have weapons, defend ourselves).

They are a “clear and present danger” despite what some mush-head says.

Extraordinary - the writer even cites events where the organized left was particularly violent and destructive and says while they were extreme, they were not violent like their supposed right-wing counterparts. The writer is living in an alternate universe being willfully ignorant at best, or knowingly lying at worst. Conservative students do not show up lighting fires to cars, buildings, engaging in physical assaults, etc. and putting the invited speakers in mortal danger causing the event to be cancelled like liberals do with speakers they don’t want speaking on a campus. I don’t recall conservative protestors putting members of the President’s cabinet in mortal danger under Democrat administrations like the liberals have with members of the President’s cabinet - the Education Secretary was literally assaulted and her vehicle attacked - had they been able to get even closer to her they probably would have beaten her to a pulp or possibly killed her. Not unique to this country - remember students rioting over in the UK because they wanted other people to pay their tuition, even attacking Prince Charles by surrounding and violently shaking his vehicle - the heir to the thrown - the left are rabid nutcases. Then they went around in France rioting and lighting the place on fire because -gasp- the retirement age was raised from 60 to 62. Back over here, they decided to walk in large crowds on interstates blocking traffic because they didn’t like the results of an election - even blocking ambulances trying to get critically ill patients to the hospital.

That’s the “nonviolent” left the author refers to.

Soros likely funded both sides...smart enough to do so through proxies / front groups to hide it.

Like Palpatine and Count Dooku if you have watched Star Wars. https://youtu.be/sIdb-et-6sM?t=57s

Soros is a very busy man these days spreading his money around....he’s go nothing to loose doing so at his age...and of course his greatest hope has been to destroy this country before he dies.

The writer appears to have a very narrow definition of political violence for the left, and a very, very broad one for the right.

Classic projection, a la Alinski.

It is inarguable that virtually ALL political violence comes from the left today, much of it even condoned by governmental institutions.

We need a two column listing of violence from both sides for the last 15 years - I bet the side with the "Right" is less than 10% of the one with the "Left".

They must have access to some really good drugs to keep coming up with this crap.

So the author thinks the left is wrong when it criticizes corporations, capitalism, globalization and Israel.

Thank you so much for those details, it is hard to try and get younger conservatives to understand this was born in the 1960s with SDS, and colleges with those Marxist Professors.
