Hurricane Harvey Live Thread Part II
Various ^ | 8/26/2017 | Various

Posted on 08/26/2017 4:39:50 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport TX about 10:00PM CDT Friday night. Top sustained winds were 130mph. Rockport High School sustained heavy damage when a portion of the roof collapsed. A senior housing complex collapsed. The Rockport courthouse sustained major damage with “a cargo trailer halfway in the building.” Multiple tornadoes reported in the Houston/Galveston areas. There are reports of scattered structural fires and a shooting was reported in Corpus Christi. Residents along the San Bernard River were advised to evacuate and most TX Gulf coast counties are under flash flood watches.

Many locations are under a boil-water notice. Power outages are widespread. President Donald Trump promptly granted a Disaster Declaration to Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s request. More than 700 members of the Texas Army and Air National Guards, Texas State Guard and the Texas Military Department have been activated and are positioning themselves throughout the state ahead of Hurricane Harvey and its anticipated landfall later this week. Ahead of the storm, FEMA sent supplies from its warehouse in Fort Worth to a staging point at Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio.

Playing catch-up on this thread... so I see numerous reports of tornados in Houston area, especially.

The Hurricane Andrew wiki entry says that that storm “spawned at least 28 tornadoes along the Gulf Coast” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Andrew) although the claims for tornados at Naranja Lakes are described by the meteorologist I quoted as effects from the eyewall.

There were more tornados during Andrew’s Cat 3 landing in Louisana and even some as far north as Maryland. I guess those result not from the inner force of the hurricanes but it’s larger effects.

That is an absolutely frightening alert. I'm sitting in Dallas, and it scares me.

Thanks for your informative post! I guess my understanding of Andrew was incomplete at best, although I did know of the poor construction issues.

I’m sitting right in the middle of it. Scares the hell out of me, too. Just keep us in your prayers. We are going to need it. Glad we have a builder for a president.

There was a post yesterday about 1000’s of homes being washed away in Houston and everything downstream of Katy......it was debunked as rumor and false

but I think there might be some truth to it......

I have been doing research....there are two old earthern dams west of Houston called the Barker and Addicks.....they hold back tons of water ......development west of them has caused more runoff.....they have a history of seeping and HIGH RISK..repairs have started but Im not sure how far they got

There are several news articles about the issue and danger of them failing..google

they had issues with 10-12 inch storms before..with seepage...20-25 in the right spot

a training band of storm is setting up right over them now too

I have believe there is a chance they will fail...

The storm sewers in my subdivision dump into a huge ditch that is a landscaped part of the green belt that runs 3 subdivisions. It dumps into Horse Pen Bayou. That bayou dumps into Clear Lake. My house did not flood in Alison, Alicia, Rita, and Ike. I should be good. But thanks.

what about the dams west of Houston?

Two Houston dams among ‘extremely high risk’

f the dams were to fail during a large rain, experts estimate the downstream flooding could cause about $60 billion in damage to downtown Houston, development along the Houston Ship Channel and the Texas Medical Center.
