Congress will return from recess next week facing continued gridlock as we lurch from one self-created crisis to another. We are proving inadequate not only to our most difficult problems but also to routine duties.
Thats not how we were meant to govern. Our entire system of government with its checks and balances, its bicameral Congress, its protections of the rights of the minority was designed for compromise. It seldom works smoothly or speedily.
It requires pragmatic problem-solving from even the most passionate partisans. It relies on compromise between opposing sides to protect the interests we share.
That has never been truer than today, when Congress must govern with a president who has no experience of public office, is often poorly informed and can be impulsive in his speech and conduct.
We must respect his authority and constitutional responsibilities. We must, where we can, cooperate with him. But we are not his subordinates. We dont answer to him. We answer to the American people. We must be diligent in discharging our responsibility to serve as a check on his power. And we should value our identity as members of Congress more than our partisan affiliation.
Lets also try that approach on immigration. The president has promised greater border security. We can agree to that. A literal wall might not be the most effective means to that end, but we can provide the resources necessary to secure the border with smart and affordable measures. Lets make it part of a comprehensive bill that members of both parties can get behind one that values our security as well as the humanity of immigrants and their contributions to our economy and culture.
Lets try it on tax reform and infrastructure improvement and all the other urgent priorities confronting us.

Thanks for the view from the ‘Rat Party, John!
“John McCain: Its time Congress returns to regular order”
This will begin the day John McCain and the other snowflake GOPe/RINOS leave.
John McCain, please, just go away.
The media won’t play all of his flip-flopping on border security.
He’ll be dead soon, ignore him.
John is the perfect candidate for: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euthanasia
“the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma. The practice is illegal in most countries.”
John is in a walking comatose state and invariably pissed off at Trump voters and Trump himself.
Please, I beg you God, don’t let him step foot near a carrier again or plane for that matter.
Good thing he’ll die soon!
What’s that chomping sound? Is it the malignancies eating on this idiot’s brain...what’s left of it? Who cares what this quisling loser says about anything?
McCain has always been a liar and a fraud. His entire life is pockmarked by deceit, contempt for others, and false narratives. Nothing of his life deserves respect.
Trump needs to send mail to every member of congress that they will shut down government if they cannot do their job and pass a budget. Enough of the continuing resolution bs. This way, congress can take the blame instead of blaming Trump.
Had to stop so my laptop would not be thrown.
I despise this backstabbing bastard.
I do too. He’s worse than the liberals, at least they don’t lie about what they are.
“John McCain: Its time Congress returns to regular order”
The shame of it is that the citizens of Arizona were taken in (AGAIN) by this self-interested, self-important asshat -
as they were ALSO taken in by Flake. WTF is wrong with you people?
McCain go to hell you rotten communists Democrat.
That goes for both his public and personal life.
So basically, the pendulum will never swing back. Democrats get into power and go full tilt on big-government legislation, and republicans get into power and sit on their hands. We will never get any corrections in power in this country, we will just get periodic lurches to the left. Thanks McCain. You’re my hero :-/
Absolutely! There was a reason we all voted for Trump, and it wasn’t so he could become part of the establishment (swamp).

Our second constitution of 1789 was/is an open door to big gub, big biz, big everything, etc. and a long line of mccains
have followed thru; the only wonder is that it has taken “them” so long!
Things sped up considerably after 1848 when Marx began his weekly writings published in the NYT (Greeley), then followed the beginning of the decline.
