Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

You are correct. I traveled FL State Rd 80 from Palm Beach County to Ft. Myers/Lee county earlier today. Gas somewhat available and low traffic. I have been off the road for 3 hours though.

301 is my go to bypass for I-95.

long trips I run with a CB in the car and when the truckers start talking about an accident and backed up traffic I take the next exit and cut over to 301.

I run the SC, NC and VA sections.

Rent a car as soon as possible. They will be selling out soon. Then worry about a hotel.

Remember it is also a football weekend so that will also hamper hotel availability for Saturday night.

At the moment, Irma appears to be headed inland directly over cities like Columbia, SC and Charlotte, NC. Some models show Irma going slightly east or west of Charlotte. So not sure of the impact to Carolinas coasts.

“didn’t FL change that by law?”

Maybe there’s some “emergency” or “exigent circumstances” exception. Or maybe the sheriff just thinks he can get away with it.

Looks like the north eyewall will shortly be passing over Salt Cay. Here is their tourist info website:

Salt Cay—The Island Time Forgot

Population 108; no paved roads; "tiny and quaint airport."

The post to which I was responding was relating to predicted record storm surge in GA and SC, possibly reaching into NC, as a result of landfall in the area of the GA-SC border.

It’s depends on if you are thinking of pin point accuracy.

But that is impossible with the weather as the system is in a constant state of change.

That’s why forecasts can change so much and even be dead wrong sometimes.

They forecast with the information they collect and they know but cannot guess at every variable that *might* happen. Or not.

So they give the best estimate they can pull together.

My daughter paid $160 for a room south of Atlanta last night. Had to do some calling ahead to find that one.

She got out of the Gainesville area about noon yesterday. Should get to home in central IN by 7 or so. Her mobile home was destroyed a year ago in Hermine, so she (mostly ME) damsure didn’t want her there for this one.

Just a thought (recalling my days living in a parsonage)... you might contact some churches in that area to see if they’re able to offer any suggestions. Maybe they’ll be opening their facilities, might have members who would like to help, etc. I’d start with churches in your same denomination. Also, I think there’s a Southern Baptist Relief group based out of Atlanta; they might have info.

I remember during blizzards when we were living just off the NY Thruway near Buffalo, we’d have strangers staying in our house during emergencies. Good people like to help if they’re able to.

If you really mean you are willing to pay anything, check out some of the luxury chains at the high end, particularly the suites; there is a Ritz Carlton in Atlanta, for instance.

during hurricane warnings or emergencies there was a transport law change. This sherrif must think he can get away with it and apologize later.
