Luther Strange Is in Trouble
Weeklystandard.com ^ | 9/8/17 | Andrew Egger

The best day of Sen. Luther Strange’s election campaign was Aug. 8, the day President Donald Trump tweeted that he had “done a great job representing the people of the Great State of Alabama” since being appointed to replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions and giving his “complete and total endorsement!” At that time, Strange was running neck-and-neck with fiery social conservative Judge Roy Moore in the polls, and it seemed possible that Trump’s endorsement would push him over the top in the race to Jeff Sessions’ seat.

Since then, however, it’s been a perfect storm of bad news for the incumbent. After qualifying along with Moore for the Sept. 26 runoff election, Strange has seen supporters of third-place finisher Mo Brooks break for his opponent and the president fall silent.

Said this from day one. Short of fraud or huge amounts of Dems voting in republican primary. Moore will win the primary handily...

The pundits will act all shocked, but Moore, was the front runner from the day he announced... Him losing would be the real shock.

Everyone in the state who even halfway follows the news knows that Strange got the Senate seat appointment for not going after Governor Bentley. It was a dirty appointment and everyone knows it.

What is sinking Strange is that upon arriving in Washington, he ran, almost literally, into Mitch McConnell’s arms. He obviously pledged his unwavering devotion to McConnell. In return, McConnell is campaigning HARD, dumping millions of Senate Campaign PAC money into the race for Strange.

The people in Alabama HATE Mitch McConnell. We are sick of Washington insiders and the GOP Establishment. That is who is driving the Strange campaign.

I predict a Moore win by 10+ points.

Put the President endorsed him and the President is against the swamp, right? Right?

...it’s been a perfect storm of bad news for the incumbent.

Well, ain't that just too bad.

Maybe the asshole will think twice next time, before he sells his political soul for a corrupt Governor, in exchange for an appointment to a vacant Senate seat.

I don't give a damn what letter is beside their name...I utterly despise a corrupt politician.

I've had to make a choice between levels of corruption when voting and that is a damned shame, but it's a fact of political life, one that is difficult to avoid...but in Strange's situation...he may as well have hung a sign around his damned neck, announcing his intention to exonerate the Governor in exchange for the seat.

Plus, his cozy relationship with Yertle the Tertle puts me off.

So...no vote for you...Strange.

Kay Ivey is planning on running.

She can keep right on running...all the way out of the damned state.

I think she’d win, too.

Based on what?

She has several strikes against her.

She graduated from Auburn.

She switched from Dimbulbrat to Republican for political expediency (and Alabamians remember stuff like that when you keep on acting like a Dimbulbrat).

And last...she's a dumb ass.

Cold day in hell she'll get my vote.

I’ve been seeing a lot of Twinkle signs, especially in the Montgomery to Opelika corridor.

Then I heard she withdrew.

I just think Cavanaugh has always been a smart politician who knows which way the wind blows. She knows Kay’s got strong a tailwind.

Oh come on!

Nobody here was a Republican before Nixon! The big change happened over the next 30 years.

If Alabamians didn’t vote for a Republican because they used to be a democrat, half the state leaders—and ANYONE over 65—would be out of a job.

The fact of the matter is Southern democrats were conservative. But starting in the 60s the democrats surged to the Left, while the Republicans moved right. The Republicans are now the moderate-conservative party, while the democrats are straight-out socialists.

Southern whites are the most vilified people in the eyes of today’s democrats. So leaving them is seen as a sane move, like recoiling upon seeing a maggot-laden corpse.

Remember Reagan saying “I didn’t leave the democratic party; the party left ME!”

Some thing over the whole South.

I don’t get everything #Trump does. He could have been placating the swamp, confident he’d get Moore anyway. Not really sure.

So leaving them (democrats) is seen as a sane move, like recoiling upon seeing a maggot-laden corpse.

I would liken it to looking in a mirror and seeing that maggot-laden corpse.

You make a good point, one that I will not argue with, since I am an admirer of some of George Wallace's policies, wherein he improved the infrastructure of the state despite the efforts of a republican legislature to load every improvement bill offered up with some of the most egregious pork one has ever seen.

Despite that, and as a democrat, he brought Alabama into the 19th century.

He just made a stupid mistake by standing in a certain school house door...but he did it as a democrat and that will not be forgotten by anyone, "d" or "r", especially now.

But...be all that as it may...I'm speaking of the current sleaze that once rode the coat-tails of Billy Jeff Clinton, when it was fashionable to do so in the state of Alabama, because anyone that knew which way the political winds were blowing, knew that no matter how vile the piece of shit Clinton administration was, he had the nod of every black politician, pastor and community leader (a rising formidable force in those days) in Alabama.

So, then, when Billy Jeff fell out of favor and the democratic policies became suspect, the winds of change and white back-lash dictated that for a politician to survive, especially a sleaze politician, it would be politically expedient to change over, 'cause, you know, that's what the good ol' boys want, now.

I have little to no use for that type of political shenanigans...which is another reason I have little use for Kay Ivey or our current senior senator.

But rest assured, I am quite familiar with the Republican Democrat that is now a Democratic Republican...or whatever they became or morphed into.

Conservative values are above and beyond either party, in my opinion.

The current crop of republicans are ass-kissing go-alongs-to-get-alongs.

We will never get anything substantive with them...we need to boot them all and start over...not that I'm convinced that improve things, either.

But I'm not so naive as to think that will ever happen.

Yertle the Tertle and Lyin Ryan will simply morph into whatever iteration is needed to ensure their longevity...and that is the problem I have...and I think it's one of the things that oldsters like me remember most about a damned politician.

But as I said...sometimes we have to hold our nose, back up to the lever, and pull it in desperation.

Roy Moore is one of those that make me hold my nose.

But I would much rather have him in the Senate, regardless of his past circus performances, than a man that supports Trump, just because his handlers told him that he should and a man that thinks Yertle the Tertle walks on water, just because he may have held his hand and kissed his ass his first three days in DC.

Roy Moore is a rabble-rouser.

I know that...everyone knows that.

And a rabble rouser is just what we're looking for, now.

Otherwise, why did Trump carry the state?

Drove those roads between Marietta GA and Huntsville many times. Dead flat, near straight across the top of each mountain, twisting and rising/falling every 200 feet going up and down each side. Beautiful view once the TN river comes visible.

Oh well, "that" view of the election will NEVER get an approved reading in Washington! It's correct of course, but Washington's media and insiders absolutely refuse to believe it. They simply cannot accept it.

Don’t count out the purchased Black Democrat vote. The Republican establishment has a history of paying retail when they have to in a close primary.

The usual method is slipping envelopes of $100s to Black pastors to get out the vote.

Robert, in my opinion, the political situation in the US is rather easy to explain. And that situation is why everything is so mixed up and broken in US politics right now.

I’m looking a a spreadsheet that I created after the last election.

Donald Trump won 79.9% of the counties in the country.
Hillary Clinton won 20.8% of the counties.

Trumps AVERAGE margin of victory in the counties he won was 36% points. Yes, that is THIRTY-SIX percentage points.

Clinton won her counties by an average of 22% points.

There is a vast, VAST gulf between the Hillary counties and the Trump counties. The media live, work and recreate in the Hillary counties. They have little, to no, idea how the people in the Trump counties live. They don’t understand them.

Worse, they report and generate media content with an eye toward reinforcing what they think (incorrectly) everyone wants to hear.

The GOP Establishment has sold out to the Hillary counties and their way of thinking.

I agree with pretty much everything you’re saying but I also understand they’re all politicians, and politicians are mostly wishy-washy lawyer scum suckers to begin with, so I don’t get to wrapped around the axle when they act as they do.

It’s just some I have less disdain for then others. The jump from democrat to Republican is because the democrats abandoned the United States and her culture. They’re the worst party in history! I’ll never think less of someone moving away from THAT party than I do of politicians to begin with (than I normally do).

I agree on rabble rousers and Moore. I’m not supporting him for religious reasons like so many I’ve talked to are. I WANT to see some names taken and a$$es kicked.

Now I don’t know much about Kay because she is so quiet and boring, like Trump calling JEB low energy JEB... But I can’t think of having a single disagreement with Ivy cause she doesn’t stand for anything, but so far I’m pleased by the fact she isn’t doing anything. My type of government is one that keeps the roads open and doesn’t virtue signal or lecture me. So far so good with Kay.

I was/am a Trump supporter because there is seriously a HELL of a lot of a$$ kicking needed in Washington and he’s NOT a politician... A least not a lifetime, getting rich off the rest of us type one.
