The fastest sustained winds I saw for H. Irma were 88 m.p.h. in Naples. It looks like NHC really overestimated Irma’s strength as it approached Florida. That’s not to say that 88 m.p.h. winds aren’t dangerous or can’t cause widespread damage. Many homes in Naples will undoubtedly need new roofs after the storm, and the electricity outages are very real. It’s just another example of the NHC inflating wind speeds (claiming sustained winds up to 130 m.p.h.) to generate fear and alarm. The public is best served by accurate information, not alarmist information.

>> “Even in evacuations, people have had to abandon their vehicles.” <<

If its a plug-in electric, you have no choice!

To attempt to evac in an electric would put your lives in severe danger..

This came from FB I also heard on Zello. It’s hard to say at this point. I am seeing it repeated all over.

I may have missed a lot, because it all began breaking up just as they were trying to get more details of her story.

Unfortunately, it’s not hard to imagine people doing this these days. The people on the channel were warning everyone to demand ID before opening doors to anyone.

Come on, even the transients on skid row in LA have smart phones. Everyone has them. I have 1 and several more in a drawer somewhere.

I don’t think the issue here is buying a cell phone to have for a disaster. Every already has one. I think you’ll agree, reliable communication is the real issue when it comes to big wide spread disasters. Be ready!

True, but not everyone has longer wire handy, most everyone has a paperclip.

Kristinn: use longer wire if you have it and it will fit, if not then a paper clip will get you something.

1. It’s free.
2. You can communicate with a large group at once verbally.
3. You can also set it to preserve your audio message so if someone isn’t on it or can’t get to it, they can hear it when they log on.
4. You can exchange info in real time.
5. You can also communicate by image.

Maybe not bragging so much as relieved. Nineteen floors is a long way to trudge up and down stairwells. ;o)

Also, downtown Tampa has most of its electrical services underground and if there was an outage, would likely be on a priority list as the courthouse, police station, hospitals, banks, businesses, etc. are located in and nearby.

We're now getting stronger winds and rain's coming down harder. Hoping it passes quickly wherever she's headed. Latest radar shows definite easterly shifting. Still listed as a Cat 2, though.

we shall see... they said Harvey was a non-event too in the beginning.

In any case, all this water has to go somewhere!

I love beautiful old Morse keys!

I have a modest collection of them.

I prefer a straight-key over an electronic keyer.

Years ago I built a simple crystal controlled RF oscillator on 40 meters. It used a single pn2222 transistor and at 20vdc put out a very chirpy 6/10s of a watt. I wound the coil on a plastic 35mm film container.

I regularly communicated with stations in California from El Paso...using a simple inverted vee antenna.

800+ miles

I still have that ugly little oscillator somewhere...if I run on to it I will take a picture and send to you.

BTW: I actually ground the crystal myself using a quartz blank for an FT-243 holder.

I used to use toothpaste to grind the blanks on a small sheet of glass...if you got the frequency a bit too high you could pull it back down by marking the crystal with a pencil...an old-timers trick :-)

FT-243 blanks and holders are very scarce now.

Nineteen floors is quite the haul, but I bet your view is great when Irma is not in town! Keep safe!
