The National Park Service plans to thin a herd of bison in the Grand Canyon through roundups and by seeking volunteers who are physically fit and proficient with a gun to kill the animals that increasingly are damaging park resources.
Some bison would be shipped out of the area and others legally hunted on the adjacent forest. Within the Grand Canyon, shooters would be selected through a lottery to help bring the number of bison roaming the far northern reaches of the park to no more than 200 within three to five years.
About 600 of the animals now live in the region, and biologists say the bison numbers could hit 1,500 within 10 years if left uncontrolled.

I like it! Refugee Resettlement Program. Drop them off in Martha's Vineyard.
“Drop them off in Martha’s Vineyard. “

Why Martha’s Vineyard?
.
Eat ‘em.
The mass hunts were ordered to deprive the natives of their primary food source.
They are extremely difficult to manage.
Even the stoutest fence won’t stop them if they want/need to get someplace.
They carry diseases that transfer to cattle, and once a state acknowledges that its ranchers’ herds are infected, that state goes under quarantine.
In the past they have shipped some to Indian reservations, which hasn’t worked out well.
We used to get permits for a limited hunt in Montana, north of Yellowstone Park...which is basically what is being offered here I think. Shoot one, gut him, get him out yourself.
Then prepared to get wholly tired of the best meat on earth lol...
p.s. There is some outfit up in east central Montana that is managing a big herd just for history/amusement sake...but the private ranchers there too are vary wary, worried about infecting their cattle.
WTF are you talking about?
Let them romp around in front of the Obama's new compound.
Yeah wolves in Yellowstone have reduced elk and deer numbers dramatically, bison not so much. Bison are much more of a challenge for wolf packs than deer and elk. Bison are much bigger and the herd structure provides effective defense against wolves.
Bison meat is very tasty and lower in fat than beef.
Would you like a herd in Florida?
They are kind of hard to coexist with at close proximity for prolonged periods of time.
I think you left out a more significant factor.
The more lasting effect was to destroy the Indians source for all the things needed to live. All the thing you say maybe true, but decimating the Indian culture was the preferred and lasting effect.
That’s a good idea. Maybe let them roam freely through Berkley, and establish another herd in Central Park.
They are killing us by degrees.
Man hunters are protected because they are man hunters.
Animals man can eat are controlled because if there were enough of them, many people could live off them and check out of the “system”.
Government doesn’t like anything that has the potential to make anyone self sufficient.
Look at how much one has to pay in order to drill for a well. If you don’t hit water and have to drill again, too bad. You have to pay every time you put a drill in the fround.
That’s my opinion.
From what I read on this thread, I’m betting that the heard has been carefully selected and managed to ensure that they are and remain disease-free: unlikely they would want to take in just any animal sent their way.
Is it wrong for me to get hungry while reading this thread?
MMMMMmmmmmmmm...
Bison burgers...

I'm far from a PETA treeehugger type, and, I hunt. (In fact, I'd love to have a bison, dressed out, and in the freezer.) But, those numbers make no sense:
How do those stupid numbers square with the fact that this country was a "natural paradise" -- back when bison herds 'darkened the landscape' for 'farther than the eye could see'???
That is what I suppose they will do, but there are many places that have no bison at all that once had thousands.....................
Like Buffalo, NY.
......and STILL no Superbowl.....................
We have so many deer here because of the hunting laws, that they had to institute ‘Doe Days’ to try and get the numbers down. We are also up to our asses in black bears and alligators. The state has hunting times and places set but the enviros raise holy hell every year when the time comes around.........................
