President Trump’s border wall could carve path through Native American lands
KVOA-TV ^ | September 16, 2017 | NBC News

Tohono O’odham Nation Chairman Edward Manuel is determined to prevent President Trump's proposed border wall from carving a path through his tribe's lands — a move which he said would separate members from much needed resources and disrupt the community’s way of life.

The nation, which is about the size of Connecticut, is a federally recognized tribe that has land and members on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border.

“Walls are made to keep animals in or out, walls cannot contain people,” Manuel said. “People are too intelligent. They can always find a way to get over the wall, under the wall or through the wall.”

The Tohono O’odham Nation is just one of many groups that have expressed concerns about the potential path of the president's proposed $1.6 billion border wall. The National Congress of American Indians is also calling on the U.S. government to work with tribes on the border to address their concerns about the impact on communities.

Much of the nearly 2,000 mile border is owned by private citizens. The government may gain rights to the land via “eminent domain laws.” These laws would allow the land to be bought out from under the owners, some of whom have already begun receiving notices.....

Didn't NBC News get the word from the #NeverTrumpers here that the wall will never be built?

Native American tribes will do anything to make a buck. They’ll sell the right of way when the price is right.

The Papagos can talk all they want.

The money comes from D.C., not Mexico City D.F.

Money talks, BS walks.

I never quite understand the legal status of Indian reservations. The Indians are American citizens but the Indian reservations are considered independent countries for certain purposes.

Perhaps in this case these Indians are saying that they don’t recognize the us-mexico Border because the Border runs through their reservation??

I got no problem with this. The Native lands are a pipeline for major drug smuggling. Talking about bus loads of heroin, coke, etc. I want a wall on the border of all the Native land bordering Mexico. But, if worse comes to worst we can build the damn wall around the rest of the entire reservation and have checkpoints for anyone exiting the native land into free America. Just wall off all the Native land not directly bordering Mexico if we must compromise on this one

Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall, that cannot contain people. People are too intelligent. They can always find a way to get over the wall, under the wall or through the wall.

That wall in Israel? The Korean DMZ? Great Wall of China?

My understanding is Indian reservations are on federal lands within the states. They are under the authority of the feds and subject to the Constitution as federal “territories”. They certainly do not trump the constitutional requirements that the feds prevent invasion which is the purpose of the wall.

Leave a gap in the wall so all the illegals travel through their lands and see how long they put up with that.

The tribes are probably thinking, “damn, we should have built a wall”.

It can exclude those who want to invade or illegally cross into a country. His tribe is welcome to relocate across the Mexican border if he feels confined. I would imagine that all members of his tribe would rather live within the US than Mexico, and probably hold US citizenship.

Yes, but Gorbachev’s wall, was to keep his people prisoners, not to keep out illegal immigrants. There is no equivalence between the two walls.
