This is somewhat 3rd hand info., but supposedly on the Weather Channel, the Mayor of San Juan said they expect some areas to be without power for 4-6 months. Apparently the system is so antiquated that the power companies have to fabricate parts locally. 4-6 months is hard to imagine & believe. But... One cannot roll in crews from Ohio w/ bucket trucks, even if you have the parts. :-(

Physically, Puerto Rico is about the size of Connecticut.

I see that PR lost ‘all’ electricity across the Island....which was expected in it’s weakened state to begin with. The Gov. will be happy to have new installed after this.

There’s a lot of photos, videos out there which are wrong areas or wrong storms or both...think people want to make it very bad everywhere as these Islands are all basically tourists areas so without federal funding etc. they could not rebuild .....

A big thank you was due to NHC losing radar/info for a time and Hurricane Hunters being right there to get much needed info once they could.

H.H. can't survey (Drop instruments)/fly over land (Extreme rough turbulence over land too) so that was a nice shout out because satellite/models is all the NHC could work with for awhile.

Going to be an expensive year for the Federal government (And hurricane season is far from being over/La Nina years which stinks).

Yes.....it was expected they’d be without power.....their infrastructure entire very weak to begin with and was put under some sort of receivership because the country declared bankruptcy in May. It’s been a long time coming with very poor governing.

I heard the Mayor saying they would be without power for about 4 months.....however with federal funding and the military waiting off shore they may have it sooner.....it’s just they have not anything to work with to begin with.

The thread headline was revised last night to reflect Category 5 status as Maria approached St. Croix and Puerto Rico.

All sources indicate sustained winds of 155 mph at 0635 Puerto Rico landfall this morning, and local radar was incapacitated shortly thereafter.

Your statement is incorrect. Maria was not a Category 2 storm about the time it hit Puerto Rico.

Thanks.

It apparently became Cat 2 as a result of hitting PR.

Is it picking up again now?

My prayers and those of many thousands, probably millions, are with you. With your families and those you love in Puerto Rico.

These next days and weeks and beyond will be hard ones. Please keep us posted on developments on this thread. The only suggestion I can offer is to keep heart and mind in today. To look ahead or behind is overwhelming, but we can cope with THIS day, this hour. That is where I find God’s strength and grace. I can do whatever I must, in this moment.

Godspeed...

Projected to gain strength (Maybe Cat 4) then hit cooler water and downgrade. Hope this goes way east of the Turks & Caicos then find a soft spot between the CONUS and Bermuda thus fading away in the Norwegian Sea.

Will they rid the PR cities of muggers and thieves when done? Paradise is no place for crime. Looters should be shot.

That may be true, but the devastation is pretty bad on some islands, much worse than on others.

It’s basic to show a map that relates to the story.

Just as a film editor will make sure that when the narrator of a documentary mentions the lion, the lion appears. Not before, not after, and not missing entirely.

“But... One cannot roll in crews from Ohio w/ bucket trucks, even if you have the parts. :-(”

Roll trucks onto barges, float to PR, rendezvous with crews who fly in.

It was an unusual and gracious hat tip to the hurricane hunters in the Forecast Discussion this afternoon. No doubt, everyone from the NHC to the incredibly brave HH are storm weary and running on fumes at this point. It’s good to see credit given where credit is due.

There was a story the published other day with headline screaming about the devastation in Dominica. Lots of photos, and nary a one showed Dominica. Instead, the photos reflected Guadalupe. Very confusing for the readers.
