when in the second grade, after school hours worked at a nursery planting evergreen tree seedling for $.25 an hour. After four hrs work, walked two miles had something to eat. Then worked 5 or 6 hours at a truck farm. Weeding, hoeing, picking by hand veges, clean, sort and pack for delivery for the next day. All for $.25 cent an hour. Used the money to buy war bond stamps. Forgot how many stamp for 1 war bond. Also collected used paper, cardboard, tin cans and fat for the war effort. Hard work but also a lot of fun time too.
We used to pick a watermelon early in the morning and put it in the spring.
About 2:00 pm we would cut that melon open and it would taste so sweet and cool.
Apples, pears, peaches and cherries from our own trees.
That was back when hard work was a virtue. Somewhere along the way society started to look down on hard physical labor and decided anyone doing it was low class.
That is how we ended up with millions of illegals here doing the stoop work and millions more on welfare.
