Road Trip: Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota

Grand Forks Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation in northeastern North Dakota, located north of Emerado and 16 miles west of Grand Forks. In the 2010 census, the base was counted as a census-designated place with a total population of 2,367.

Opened 60 years ago in early 1957, the base's current host unit is the 319th Air Base Wing (319 ABW) assigned to the Expeditionary Center of the Air Mobility Command (AMC).

The RQ-4 Global Hawk is a high-altitude, long-endurance, remotely piloted aircraft with an integrated sensor suite that provides global all-weather, day or night intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capability. Global Hawk's mission is to provide a broad spectrum of ISR collection capability to support joint combatant forces in worldwide peacetime, contingency and wartime operations.

Global Hawk is flown by a Launch and Recovery Element (LRE) and a Mission Control Element (MCE). The LRE is located at the aircraft base and functions to launch and recover the aircraft while en route to and from the target area. The MCE controls the Global Hawk for the bulk of the ISR mission.

The Global Hawk is operated by the 12th Reconnaissance Squadron at Beale Air Force Base, California, and the 348th Reconnaissance Squadron at Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota, but aircraft are rotated to operational detachments worldwide. The 1st RS at Beale AFB provides formal training for all RQ-4 pilots and Block 30 sensor operators, while the 348 RS formal training unit (FTU) at Grand Forks AFB provides training for all Block 40 sensor operators.

The garden is not doing as well as I would like it to. I have not been able to devote the time to it that I have in the past. John-Man and I went out into the Front Garden yesterday and did major weed pulling and cleanup. The Back Garden will receive similar treatment this week.

The boys in Florida are doing well. Lots of cleanup, but no major damage.

I was born and raised in Grand Forks, and also spent 20 years in the Air Force, but I was never stationed there. 😄 My last duty station, was Travis AFB.

there is a hurricane named Maria who is
wrecking havoc in the Atlantic.
Prayers that something knocks it
back into the open ocean.

Haven't seen anything on the fires;
hoping it means that they are now under control.

I am a civilian, in fact an old lady, but I love to fly. Since I taught myself how to do a lot of things, like riding a motorcycle, driving, shooting, and all manner of musical instruments, I was hoping to someday get my pilot’s license someday.

Problem was...nobody would loan me their airplane so I could PRACTICE! :-)
