Not mad, just adventurous: Cyclist completes trip around the world in 80 days

SPIRIT OF HUMANITY   Mark Beaumont set a world record, cycling 16 hours every day on his 79-day trip through 16 countries. The hardest part of the challenge, he said, was sleep deprivation.

PARIS—As he got off his bike in front of the Arc de Triomphe, Mark Beaumont looked remarkably fresh for a man who had just cycled around the globe in less than 80 days, shattering the world record.

After pedaling for 16 hours a day through 16 countries, Mr. Beaumont arrived on Monday evening to a welcome from family and friends at the spot from which he had set off before dawn 78 days, 14 hours, and 40 minutes earlier.

The time it took him to ride his journey’s 18,032 miles “were definitely the longest two and a half months of my life,” he said. “I’ve taken myself beyond anything I’ve ever done physically and mentally.”

“He has always had an adventurous spirit,” explains his mother, Una, when asked if her boy had always been a bit mad.

Beaumont’s route led from Paris to Beijing, via Russia and Mongolia, and then to Australia and New Zealand. He cycled across Canada and the United States before flying to Lisbon and the final mountainous stage to Paris.

Imagine how his legs must twitch while he sleeps...

Speaking of sleeping, that guy is due for a few days worth.

Then it is on to Mars...

If he is going to stick to Jules Verne -inspired trips, I think his next trip will be From the Earth to the Moon. ;)~

An old favorite of mine, you can read it online here: http://jv.gilead.org.il/pg/moon/.

Where do these people get the money and time to peddle a bicycle around the world? And now they’re going to make this guy a hero or something? Very odd.

It’s only 238,900 mi to the Moon. He could do that in just about a thousand and one days, if he kept a similar pace...

Good stuff. But technically, he shouldn't fly across oceans.

He should be on cruise ships, continuously pedaling on stationary bikes in the gym while being transported between continents.

Sponsors - Artemis Investments was/is his main one. Think of him as a NASCAR driver.

The guy has been at this type of thing since he was 12, probably is hired to speak at many meetings, events, etc. I'd like to hear what he has to say, ask a few questions.

Sponsorships. "'It’s a marvelous, marvelous achievement,' said Lindsay Whitelaw, founder of Artemis Investments, Beaumont’s main sponsor . . ."

Notice that Beaumont, a Scot, started and ended in Paris. Bicycling is a big deal in France.

He's been peddling since 12? An overachiever huh? And people pay to hear him talk about it? ☺

Yeah, but it is uphill the whole way.

This would be the most legitimate way to cross oceans.

I have one of those.

I belong to our local lake patrol.

The rotten teenagers ride up on their jets skis and splash me.

So I shoot them.

Don’t worry, I just wing them a little bit.

Have you ever heard/seen a motivational speaker? There are many different styles, types, backgrounds. Companies hire them to speak at sales conferences for instance - a few that I’ve seen are truly remarkable people.

It is only uphill until you escape Earth’s Gravity, you can coast down the Moon’s gravity well, but I recommend checking the brakes ahead of time.

Yes, that’s why I’m not into corporate sales hacks and motivational speakers. Like the financial motivational speakers. Most all are con men attempting to hustle your money.

Like other motivational speakers, ya have to ask yourself, why in tarnation would anyone want to give you their formula or secret to getting rich?

Link to Wikipedia doesn’t work. There are two closing quotes on the URL. You could ask the mod to remove one.

Beaumont came off his bike three times, breaking a tooth and apparently fracturing an elbow in one nasty fall occasioned by a Russian pothole, but the hardest part of the challenge, he said, was sleep deprivation.

...Rising at 3:30 in the morning and in the saddle by 4 a.m., Beaumont rode for four-hour spells, with 30-minute breaks in between.

...For the past 11 weeks, Beaumont has scarcely taken more than the few paces he needed to fall into bed. He has got out of the habit of walking.
