~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Riley, Kansas

riley2

Fort Riley is named in honor of Major General Bennett C. Riley who led the first military escort along the Santa Fe Trail. The fort was established in 1853 as a military post to protect the movement of people and trade over the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe trails.

In the years after the Civil War, Fort Riley served as a major United States Cavalry post and school for cavalry tactics and practice. The post was a base for skirmishes with Native Americans after the Civil War ended in 1865, during which time George Custer was stationed at the fort.

The 1st Infantry Division is a combined arms division of the United States Army, and is the oldest continuously serving in the Regular Army. It has seen continuous service since its organization in 1917 during World War I. It was officially nicknamed "The Big Red One" after its shoulder patch and is also nicknamed "The Fighting First".

riley4

The early history of Fort Riley is closely tied to the movement of people and trade along the Oregon and Santa Fe trails. These routes, a result of then popular United States doctrine of "Manifest Destiny" in the middle of the 19th century, prompted increased American military presence for the protection of American interests in this largely unsettled territory. During the 1850s, a number of military posts were established at strategic points to provide protection along these arteries of emigration and commerce.

In the fall of 1852, a surveying party under the command of Captain Robert Chilton, 1st U.S. Dragoons, selected the junction of the Republican and Smoky Hill Rivers as a site for one of these forts. This location, approved by the War Department in January 1853, offered an advantageous location from which to organize, train and equip troops in protecting the overland trails.

Sure will. The SWFL cam is up and running now and the Decorah ones will be on 10-6. Lots of birdies to distract and entertain us!

((HUGS))Good morning, Ladies. Thanks for this morning's thread, Lauren. How's it going?

Oh wow! Already? COOL! I hadn’t checked lately. Just now checked the sea eagle cam, which was running the other night but it isn’t now. But a chatter said the NEFL cam is up too. I didn’t think they came up until later in the month for some reason. Time to keep a close eye on the others as well, like IL and MN.

Gonna be nice to see our old feathered friends again. :-)

I sort of troll through them daily, and Dale Hollow is up and the nest is full of grass. LOL!

DC, Trio and Hanover are still shut down, as are all the owl cams. Although there was a video on FB this afternoon that there was an owl hooting in OKC! The cam is still down, though.

Guess I’d better go. Staying up past 3am last night has caught up with me. I guess the Night Owl is getting lazy. LOL! See ya tomorrow night. Quiz night. Already?? Sheesh! Anyhooooo...

Guess it’s time to get on the stick and start checking them all out again. I just didn’t expect any of them to be up yet. I’ve checked the Savannah cam periodically but check more often now that owls have been to the nest the past couple of weeks.

Catch ya for the quiz! Sleep well.

Today is a bittersweet day for me. My first experience in losing people I got to know in the pressure cooker of a combat zone happened during my participation in Operation Restore Hope. Fast friends made during my deployment with the 50th Public Affairs Detachment, assigned to 1st Brigade 10th Mountain Division, Mogadishu Somalia. The memory of the young E-5 sergeant I featured in a story on training infantry soldiers for riot control, and the MP SSG on convoy escort duty with us during a week long trek to Kismayou. Both from the 977th MP Company, both killed on this day 24 years ago.

I had already left country by the time this battle erupted, but I’d known some of the people involved and their death affected me like I was there when it happened. Its why I volunteered to go back that Christmas and spent another 10 days in that hell hole to try and exercise my guilt for not being there when it happened.

I wish I could say it was the only time I lost friends while in harms way, but I can’t. But today, I will remember and honor them and when I’m finally home tonight, lift a glass in their honor. You’re never forgotten. #RTLW #ArmyTeam #NeverForget

Yes indeed...I did NOT want to turn the heat on till November, so I turned the thermostat down below 60.

The heat came on this morning. Grrrrr.

A long time FReeper and frequent poster in the Canteen has passed away.

bentfeather/Soaring Feather
died on September 28, 2017
Here is

Her Obituary

She also had a poetry thread here in Free Republic for several years.

"Of Broomsticks and Thistles
and old bones that rattle
down old dirt roads
driving rusty old jalopies
white with dust and time
while
grey headed ghosts
turn with a grin
a toothy smile he smiles
at the two of them
he looks straight thru them
as an xray machine
and counts the vertabre line by line
quickly he turns with a jerk and a shout
his pig nose exposes an obnoxious smirk
his hollow eyes gleam red
and
down this dirt road
everyone is dead.

I was there from 2003-2005 when I wasn’t in Korea or in Iraq. Gonna be interesting to see all the changes there since I left.
