An Ontario elementary school removed a decades-old totem pole from outside its front entrance on Friday, after discovering that it was built without Indigenous input.
Grade 6 students at Summitview Public School in Stouffville, Ont., about 50 kilometres north of Toronto, carved the totem pole in 1973. Former teacher Bernadine Mumford, who started the project, told the Stouffville Sun-Tribune it was a part of Canadian history exercise that focused on the great harm done to Indigenous peoples.
It bothered me that there was an implication it was racist, she told the paper.
After community-based concerns emerged about the structure, the York Region District School Board decided it amounted to cultural appropriation. While initially constructed with positive intentions, the board said in a letter to parents last week, our understanding of how cultural appropriation affects our learning environments has developed significantly.
The totem pole was created without consultation or involvement of members of Indigenous Nations, including members of the Indigenous Nations of the West Coast for which the totem pole is unique.
In deciding what to do, the board consulted with representatives from the Chippewas of Georgina Island, a local First Nation, who agreed the totem pole had to come down. Band councillor Lauri Hoeg said she told board officials that since the structure was getting old and rickety, and had evidently offended a parent, it was best to just get rid of it.

Got a tooth ache? Go see the shaman. Besides, we don’t take wampum.
Hungry? Hit the forest, and stay out of Burger King.
PS: The white man brought horses, so you’re walking from now on.
Guess las Vegas, Disneyland and all other attractions have to be taken down. Maybe that is why Paddock shot the place up.
Summer camps: they are coming for you ...
And BOOM - there's the money quote.
"Old and rickety" - "built without local input" - all just noise.
The truth is, someone was offended, so it has to come down.
Oh please.
Stop being such push overs.
This BS is even more prevalent in Canada than the US.
THAT’LL TEACH,... uhhhh... SOMEONE ..um SOMETHING!! I guess.
Horrors! Cultural appropriation 44 years ago!
The kids in California have for years had a fourth grade unit where they built scale models of the Spanish missions complete with Indians in and around the missions to represent the daily life. To my knowledge, NOT ONE REAL INDIAN ever joined in the classroom projects! This cumulative cultural appropriation is of unfathomable scale! Millions of kids built scale model missions without a real Indian present.
Fortunately, we are wiping out our past and the Mission unit is being done away.
I don’t know if a replacement unit has been specified yet, but I think building scale models of the Castro District in San Francisco would be appropriate. It shouldn’t be hard to get bearded leather clad men with bottomless chaps to come to the classrooms to provide real “cultural guidance” to the kids. That would completely avoid the problems of cultural appropriation.
Um...Canada has NO Indigenous people, and never did. Because no human is or was indigenous to this Hemisphere. You would think a “teacher” would know that
What is the great sin of “cultural appropriation”?
If cultural appropriation is bad, then every native American should live in a tee-pee or an adobe hut, every African-American should stop wearing clothes and using modern bathroom facilities and every Hispanic should go back to living in the Aztec style..........................
If the Left wants to play the "cultural appropriation" game, then I suggest that all non-westerners give up on western inventions like electromagnetic induction, the internal combustion engine, the circuitboard etc. and return to the stone or bronze ages.
No ancient Egyptians were consulted when the Luxor Casino built their pyramid. Maybe some Afro-Centric agitator can demand that it be taken down too (never mind that the ancient Egyptians weren't black...but hey, who are we to let facts like that get in the way of minority victimology).
Lord, that made me laugh!! We actually made miniature adobe bricks!!
Liberalism really, really is a mental disease.
