California Death Row Inmate Who Was Near Top of Execution List Dies in Prison

A condemned murderer who was one of just 16 inmates on California’s Death Row to have exhausted his appeals died of unknown causes, prison officials have announced.

San Quentin officials are investigating the death of Fernando Belmontes, 56, but say there was no obvious cause. More details about his death earlier this month have not been released.

Belmontes was one of 16 condemned inmates — out of California’s nearly 750 — who had exhausted his appeals. As such, he was considered a top priority for execution.

Belmontes was sentenced to die at 20 years old, a year after he murdered 19-year-old Steacy McConnell during a 1981 burglary. It started when he and two others broke into McConnell’s home in San Joaquin County, just east of Lodi.

Belmontes, who was living in a halfway house at the time, bludgeoned McConnel 15-20 times with an iron dumbell, crushing her skull.

Guess everyone behind him on the list is unhappy.

A sad wasted life, in prison all of his adulthood.
The victim’s family should not have had to wait so long for justice either. If drug companies continue denying their product to prisons, I see ‘firing squads’ becoming a real choice very soon.

This is pathetic. Swift justice is real justice, screw the lawyers and appeals.

Chicken! He could brutally kill a young, defenseless girl yet he didn’t want to live long enough to pay for it.

At least we can use the chemical cocktail on another deserving butcher.

The murderer was sentenced to die at 20, but 36 years later, he dies of some unknown cause. Wow. THIRTY SIX years after he beat a 19 year old girl to death.

Sometimes justice takes a long time to happen. This is ridiculous.

I think 36 years in a tiny cell with bars is an extremely unpleasant fate, knowing there is zero chance you’ll ever be free in this life.

36 years of breathing, eating, and masturbating was lot more than he deserved, even in a cell.

Death penalties should be required to be carried out within 1-2 yrs. There should be a specific and careful appeals process for all cases, then BAM BOOM good night.

Death row in California is really a life sentence because we all know they are more than compassionate to murderers and rapists of young girls
