The tragic plight of Germans in AMERICA during the First World War I
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 10/18/2017 | Harvey Day

Posted on 10/18/2017 9:20:01 AM PDT by Jewbacca

A fascinating collection of photos have resurfaced showing the hardships faced by German-Americans at the brutal height of the First World War. As Europe was ravaged by fighting, German immigrants in the US suffered harassment, internment, lynchings - and even the humiliation of being tarred and feathered.

Although a little-remembered part of history today, America was wracked by the fear and paranoia that swept from coast to coast during the Great War.

The United States declared war on Germany in April 1917 and helped lead the Allies to victory. But before that, many Americans were terrified of the German threat growing on the other side of the world.

This collection of pictures reveals the full extent of war hysteria and open hostility towards all things German that erupted across the nation.

Before the war broke out, America had welcomed German immigrants and regarded them highly. German was the second most widely spoken language in the country and there were over 100 million first and second-generation German-Americans living in the United States, with many of them involved in the thousands of German organizations across the country.

The United States embraced them and the German language became an established part of the high school curriculum.

But when the war broke out and Germany became the enemy of the Allies abroad, the American government began calling on its people to reject their German-American neighbors.

President Woodrow Wilson declared that German-Americans were to be treated as 'alien-enemies' and that they should reject their German identity if they were to be accepted in US society.

Germans and their offspring in the Upper Midwest (Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, etc) didn’t suffer much as they tended to be a majority most places.

Colorado Etc.?

Meanwhile in reality-land:

“the United States detained at least 11,000 ethnic Germans, overwhelmingly German nationals”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internment_of_German_Americans

Vs

The genocide of Millions.
https://www.google.com/search?q=bolshevik+genocide

Where’s the “tragedy” again?

Iowa and Nebraska.

I don’t think Sen. Joseph McCarthy was German, but I believe ethnic German-Americans were his strongest Wisconsin supporters.

FWIW: I believe there were Italians detained in WW2. Stuff happens.

>>Stuff happens.

Evidently a whole lot more “stuff” happened in the Bolshevik Gulags than in American Interment camps.

Does the UK Mail have Algore’s Interweb search thingee yet? Maybe they should get a subscription or something.

Descendants of Nazi and Italian revisionists and Islamists called the following video “offensive” and had it censored at YouTube.

Compared to what percentage of those who stayed behind in Russia and got purged by the Bosheviks?

"The city of Berlin, Ontario changed its name to Kitchener in 1916."

That might have something to do with many of the Nazi families having moved to Alberta. One of their brats spent his whole life propagandizing Nazism and anti-American speech from Bruderheim. He said that he was ten years old before leaving Germany. I once managed to get him a little riled, and he said that the U.S.A. exterminated millions of German prisoners of war in U.S. concentration camps and forced the Japanese to fight by depriving Japan of oil.

Baloney. That's a load of divisive Bolshe-shyte commie propaganda from the UK Mail.

Does the leftist UK Mail have any opinions to offer up on the TRAGIC mass genocide inflicted on Ukraine under the purview of their comrades?

Not all Japanese Americans were housed in those nice billets (which I have slept in since). Only the national security risks were housed in them, and the facilities around them were nice. Communications between Japanese government/military officials and Japanese Americans who associated with them were monitored (relatives and the like). That was the purpose of the temporary internment.

3.3 million out of 5.7 million Russian prisoners of war died in German captivity. The Geneva Convention requires signatories to follow the rules of the convention even with prisoners from nations that are not signatories of the convention. Germany was in clear violation of the Geneva Convention in their dealings with Russian prisoners of war. The Russians made no pretext of following the Geneva Convention. The West German Government estimates that 3,060,000 Germans were captured by Soviet Forces during the war. Of that figure 1,094,000 died in Russian captivity.

I was not aware that SHAEF had planned an invasion of the Soviet Union, with Patton in command.

German PWs were so terribly treated by their day work release bosses in western states, that many of those German prisoners later owned American ranches. During World War 1, Americans even had a national gardening program aimed specifically at helping the government to feed starving Europeans. Quite a contrast to the way Europeans treated each other.

Here, for benefit of the collectivists in the UK Mail peanut gallery - let's align their "TRAGIC" perspective in the context of the Bolshsevik's craftsmanship:

Berlin, Michigan, became Marne.

The name lives on at the nearby Berlin Racetrack.

Pssst.

"The group can trace its origins back to launch of the mid market national newspaper the Daily Mail by Harold Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Rothermere, and his elder brother, Alfred Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Northcliffe, in 1896.[4] It was incorporated in 1922 and its shares were first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1932. Harmsworth, who had been elevated to the peerage as Lord Rothermere, was editorially sympathetic to Oswald Mosley[4] and the British Union of Fascists and he wrote an article, "Hurrah for the Blackshirts", in January 1934.[5] Referring to Adolf Hitler's proposed invasion of Czechoslovakia, Rothermere, again writing in the Daily Mail, said in 1938 that "Czechs were of no concern to Englishmen".[6]"

That UK Mail?

Might want to check their own glaz hoyz before they start throwing "tragic" stones across the pond.

Marching Orders: The Untold Story of World War II, by Bruce Lee, is an accounting of the high level intelligence advisories generated by the American cryptanalysis effort in WW II. No one who was in the know had any doubt that internment of Japanese Americans was justified.
