Just half of Massachusetts students meet MCAS test expectations

Just half of Massachusetts students in grades three through eight met or exceeded expectations on the new "next generation MCAS test" in math and English — the first time the test has been administered.

Massachusetts education officials released the spring 2017 test results on Wednesday.

Educators were quick to caution against making direct comparisons between a student's performance on the new test and the original, nearly 20-year-old, MCAS.

Scoring for the new test falls into four categories: Exceeding Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Partially Meeting Expectations and Not Meeting Expectations.

As a result, some students who scored "proficient" on last year's MCAS test may find they only scored "partially meeting expectations" on the new, tougher exam.

"We're establishing a new baseline so comparisons with the past are difficult," said state Education Secretary James Peyser. "They really are apples and oranges."

The new hybrid exam mixes elements of the familiar Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) test with another test aligned with federal Common Core state standards known as the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers — or PARCC — test, which was developed by a national consortium that includes Massachusetts.

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education voted in 2015 instead to combine the two exams to create a "next-generation, computer-based, and Massachusetts-specific test."

I caught part of that story on the local WCVB-TV (ABC) news tonight.

The graphic they used said students in the Massachusetts city of Chelsea, so sad, were only 23 percent of “meeting or exceeding” expectations.

But the city the newsheads used as a good example (I forget which city) had 47 percent of students who met or exceeded expectations. Yay!

Wait a minute. Fewer than half of these kids met expectations? That’s all?

Public schools suck. No other word for it. The people who work for them can protest all they want, tell us all day how hard they work at teaching our children and how professional they are. But at the end of the day, the schools simply aren’t working. Drastic action is required.

I disagree entirely. Private schools excel on the basis of exclusivity. From my perspective, public schools have an excellent record considering their inclusive admission.

But you can bet 80% of them are receiving A’s and B’s.

This is all deliberate.

The dumbing down of the USA’s students is absolutely necessary for the justification of importation of foreign workers and for justification of businesses expanding workforces outside of the USA not within where labor is less expensive and globalism is fomented.

I guess not much time is left after the transgender comes in to read to the kids and the kids are instructed on which rest room they can use and they have to wait until Muslims return from their prayers 5 times a day and they finish singing songs about saint Obama and get up off their knees after demonstrating the National anthem and pledge of allegiance there is no time for math and English, maybe after Spanish lessons

Bullshit. I live in Mass and its all about the school district. My town is 98% white. Coincidence that over 95% pass the MCAS test scoring highly proficient? Liberals will say its because our town is rich and white. That’s just ancillary. It’s that our town is made up of intact 2-parent families that give a shit about their children’s schooling.

Umm Halloo. I grew up in that town and was educated in a once in a life time fashion. I am an extremely well versed person as a result and I will always Thank God for giving my Mom the good sense to move when we did.
Massholechusetts is now a sewer where even wealthy towns get bad results.
I do not care about the Racial make up so much as the Utter Idiots that these Unions hire as teachers hire as Lifers.
Public Education...for the most part..is child Abuse.
Mine went to Catholic and Private Schools as a result.
I do not live in my home town ... I live in one deemed to be equally “privileged”..
it is not.

Just saying’.

Mass is a sewer? Ok. So my kids, and my brothers kids, my wife, and my wife’s brother who all attended public school here didn’t get educated. Here’s where they went to college: Johns Hopkins, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Boston College, and the United States Naval Academy. Yes, idiots all of them, products of the sewer that is Massachusetts. You’re delusional.

I did not say that it always was a sewer, but it sure as hell is now.
I got classical education in the Public School system here. You can call me whatever you wish, but public education in this State will never return to it’s former glory.
