The USS Ronald Reagan, a 100,000-ton nuclear powered aircraft carrier, patrolled in waters east of the Korean peninsula on Thursday, in a show of sea and air power designed to warn off North Korea from any military action.
The U.S. Navys biggest warship in Asia, with a crew of 5,000 sailors, sailed around 100 miles (160.93 km), launching almost 90 F-18 Super Hornet sorties from its deck, in sight of South Korean islands.
It is conducting drills with the South Korean navy involving 40 warships deployed in a line stretching from the Yellow Sea west of the peninsula into the Sea of Japan.
The dangerous and aggressive behavior by North Korea concerns everybody in the world, Rear Admiral Marc Dalton, commander of the Reagans strike group, said in the carriers hangar as war planes taxied on the flight deck above.
We have made it clear with this exercise, and many others, that we are ready to defend the Republic of Korea.

Air Force question???
Does the US Navy have carrier based MOAB capability??
I suspect not, due to the size and weight of that weapon.

C-130’s don’t take off from or land on carriers.
Carrier based aircraft are not capable of carrying a MOAB.
But the B61 fits just fine.....
That is one looong weapon. Can imagine moving that thing around or getting it n up from the magazine to the flight deck.
There was one C-130 that managed it, but there were no other aircraft anywhere on the flight deck. The C-130 was most likely empty, too.
That’s right.

When did that happen?
Thanks. That’s neat.
Oh, indeed. I'd rather see those aboard carriers than stored at, say, an airbase in Turkey.
Anyone catch what General Kelly said today about thousands of soldiers on Okinawa awaiting orders? May have been a slip up. But when he said it it made me realize we’re ready to pull that trigger on Rocket Man.
C130 pilots were sometimes not quite sane from some of the stuff I recall seeing them do. They seemed to see a too short field as a challenge.
I missed that. But, for the last two months, I have expected something to happen during the new moon week.
I keep waiting.
Gov Rick Perry was a C130 pilot.
My son was a career C130 crew chief.
He has lots of stories.
One really good one was breaking down in Turkey with the Jordanian Prince on board. It was a secret he was on board and they didn’t want the Turks to know. Said he practically repaired it with bubble gum and wire and they made it to England fine and dandy.
It’s difficult to imagine the space for crewmen on a 100,000 ton carrier, even though I know the aircraft are much larger now.
I served on the FDR (CVA-42) 1960-62, which was designed for 3600. However, we carried 5000 personnel including the squadrons. The FDR was just 55,000 tons, so space for personnel was very small. We carried about 100 aircraft of various types.
Berthing for enlisted was a piece of canvas (3x6) lashed to an aluminum frame in a stack of three “racks”. Pillow and mattress were 2” thick. Mattress had a cover like a pillow slip and there was a small sheet and wool blanket.
The shows I’ve seen aboard modern carriers show the crew berthing to be real beds and lots of space. GOOD FOR THEM!!
I also have to say that the best food I’ve eaten was during my two years on that ship! Navy cooks are great!
