Lack of proper vetting. If they hadn't let all those Yankees move into the counties near Washington, DC, Virginia would still vote for conservatives.

Forty years ago they should have passed a law that anyone buying property in Virginia had to sign a pledge of their undying devotion to Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. That would have made those folks choose Maryland (which is hopelessly Democratic anyway).
