Buck Sexton: If police can execute an innocent man on video, none of us are safe
The Hill ^

The Shaver case is well beyond politics. There is nothing conservative, liberal or constitutional about an agent of the state killing an American without just cause. It is deeply wrong regardless of party or ideology. Bernie Sanders voters and the most ardent Trump supporters all should be united in outrage over the death of Daniel Shaver.

Maricopa County District Attorney Bill Montgomery got it right by charging Brailsford with second degree murder. The jury got it very wrong. Shaver should be alive, and his death must be taken as a call to action. Police departments should establish that a suspect always has the ability to show hands and lie down on the ground for arrest. Complicated law enforcement commands that require mobility and balance — under threat of execution — cannot be an acceptable standard.

When good faith efforts to respond to police commands can be met with a hail of bullets, we are all in jeopardy, and the work of all law enforcement officers becomes more difficult and dangerous.

“...many cops don’t in such situations exactly like that where the perp DOES have a gun.”

Making up facts to support your blind support of Stasi-cops.

PK.

But he was not a “perp” (perpetrator). He was a U.S. citizen who had done nothing wrong.

They can, and have, for noncompliance.

Just standing there with your hands in the air not reacting can be seen as a threat.

Just remember folks, He was CLEARED By Internal Affairs, his Commanding Officers, and All of his fellow Officers.

This alone should make EVERYONE SCARED of the Police.

Why are we supposed to have Trust and Faith in the Police again, I forgot??

This is not just about this case. It’s about the entire way policing in America is conducted since 9/11. We need major reform across the board.

” nerves of absolute steel”

Just keep in mind the general public has nothing near nerves of steel.

Give me 24 hours with absolute authority without reproach to do what I want, and I can have anyone confessing to the Lincoln assassination.

5 minutes is a long time for a non combat experienced person to endure the treatment he got under threat of violence.

A mistake on the side of the perp was inevitable in this circumstance.

It’s good for cops to go home safe, but it’s good for the public to make it home too.

I agree there was stupidity on both sides. You don’t want the cop hurt but he did choose a dangerous job and is given a great amount of authority and advantage over the public and hence is held to a higher standard.

The perp is an idiot for brandishing a rifle out the window, but he did not come out the room with one either.

They can’t make a case but the cops at Costco or the most recent one would shoot you anyway for not obeying an order.Once he has decided to shoot there will be an excuse.

Having broken both knees a Tibia, fibula, and femur over the years I could not have complied with those orders.

It’s almost as bad as that incident in California (Riverside?) where a bunch of cops beat an obvious mentally challenged homeless man to death. The poor guy was crying out for his father (who was in another city, if not another state at the time) to save him. It is one of the most heartbreaking videos I have ever seen.

They really can’t make a case to shoot you if your arms are outstretched and you aren’t moving.

Sure they can.

You were "non compliant" with their orders to balance on one foot, knit a scarf and sing "Camptown Races" in the key of B flat.

Sorry, the cop should never have been a cop and YOU should never be in a position where your responsibility is to hire or train cops,

Then why in the world have body cam footage? I bet they would have showed the footage to the jury if they found pot or a weapon? Note to me: if I am ever a juror and find out there is footage that they won’t show me... vote innocent. The unsealing of the material after the trial is a complete travesty IMHO.

Most of you arguing this case don't even realize how far you've been suckered into accepting totalitarianism. You argue over whether he did reach into his waistband, or did comply with the orders fast enough, correctly enough, or whether the officers could be sure if he had a gun or not, etc.

Simple fact is, the police shot an unarmed man. Period. Feel free to debate all of the legalistic issues if you want, but they shot an UNARMED MAN. How is it that a scenario developed where the police put themselves into a position to be so afraid of an unarmed man? A situation where they felt that they didn't have nearly enough control of an unarmed man to assure that he wasn't a threat?

THe cops were certainly armed well enough. We got the pleasure of seeing the video shot from the perspective of the cop pointing the M-16 (AR-15) at the half-naked, unarmed suspect the entire time, even while he was on his face, legs crossed, hands out, and I'm willing to bet he wasn't the only cop doing that. And yet, a lot of you are still willing to argue that the cops' actions are justifiable because of some small movement made by the victim after damn near a full minute of complying with what appeared to be some rather arbitrary and useless orders.

What was the point of the whole sequence of commands, making the victim lie on his face, showing his hands, etc etc if they weren't going to go over and secure him? That sequence alone should give pause, but even more so when you realize that the man was UNARMED.

Oh, and what was the reason for this whole sequence of events? What would justify the level of paranoia shown by the cops? Was a bank robbed? Was someone just shot? Was there a jailbreak from the penitentiary? Nope. Someone called because they saw an air rifle. Even if it had been a real rifle, nobody had been shot, robbed, threatened, or in any way harmed to justify a jacked-up swat team going through a procedure more complicated than those we used TO TAKE POWS IN THE MIDDLE EAST (I did this!).

The fact that we aren't universally condemning this murder simply based on the fact that this does, indeed, appear to be STANDARD COP PROCEDURE shows that we are all slaves now.

Hope that cop has to look over his shoulder for the rest of his miserable life.

If someone in my family was killed like this his days would be numbered consequences be damned.
