Bravo! Yes,the swatter (hate that term-sounds like a mosquito/fly killer) may have initiated the attack but their co-conspirators are the dispatch and the police officers on scene. The guy may have started it but no one would have died if law enforcement did their job properly.
If something like this happened to us, we would both be dead. I know that for a fact. And, likely my doggy too. Anyone storms into our house, they will get a response.
This guy deserves the death penalty. He murdered someone as surely as Charlie Manson did. Manipulation.

Exactly—the cop shooting to kill when someone opening his door to a SWAT team is perceived to make a hand movement near his waist is part of an all too common trend that needs to be addressed.

In 1968, when I had just been released from an almost year-long stay in the hospital for gunshot wounds I had from combat in Vietnam, I was pulled over by a LAPD cop. For some reason, he mistook my car for the car of a reported armed robber. Before I had time to even understand what was happening, he had my door open and was pulling me from the driver's seat with a 12 gauge in my face and he was in a high state of agitation. It was a close thing. Another innocent guy across the city was pulled over the same way and shot to death because they thought he was the robber they were looking for. He wasn't.
Police cannot and must not be a blind weapon that can kill without consequences, even when just called into action by a sick bastard who wants to cause trouble.

Apparently, the swatter (like hundreds of “hello my name is Victoria, there is no problem with your credit card, but...” telemarketers) was able to spoof the caller ID system to show a local phone number. Why the 911 operator or other official up the line did not call back to verify the source of the call and information given is a problem. The SWAT team did not arrive on scene within seconds, rather it probably took a substantial amount of time to assemble the team and get them to the scene. This time could have been used to accumulate information on the situation.
To dispatch a lethal team on the basis of a single phone call is a serious lapse of control.

This is an internet forum. Perhaps you should better understand the concept. This forum features the ability to engage in private messaging. If it's posted on the thread, it is not a private conversation.
Also, it is not "hijacking" to discuss details relevant to the subject thread. Again, you demonstrate your cluelessness on how forums work. It would be "hijacking", for example, if someone tried to direct the discussion about this story to the evils of abortion (as often happens on Free Republic).

Actually, it says a lot about both. The “swatter” needs to spend about 35 years in prison. The police need to review their procedures such that they determine who is the bad guy when there is no corroboration other than a phone call. Seems simple to me.

No, but they have “rules of engagement” that allow them the use of deadly force far too quickly. This dead guy voluntarily let the SWAT “killers” into his home because he was innocent of any criminal activity. This “bull$hit about “furtive hand movements” being justification for taking someone’s life is criminal. No one wants anyone on either side to die, citizens or the cops, but the cops have “formulated” a policy for the use of lethal force that “protects” them at the expense of innocent citizens. You are, by your comments, in effect saying that cops lives matter more that the rest of us, and that is shameful. You must be a cop.

Finally, Louie Fisk should stifle himself. It’s called “FREE” Republic! I am surprised the mods haven’t contacted him. They should at least ask him to identify to which PD’s SWAT team he belongs.
The swatter should be charged with first degree murder. Is he doing this across state lines? Then make it a federal case. Go for the death penalty. Make an example of this person.
