North Korean restaurants in China and other countries are seen as 'a key source of foreign currency revenue for the regime of leader Kim Jong-un'....A large number of North Korean restaurants operating in China are expected to close soon, as the 'Jan. 9 deadline' imposed by Beijing in accordance with the United Nations sanctions nears, sources in China said Saturday.

It’s for the best. North Koreans are really stringy and tough.

While in Japan I visited a few pachinko halls.
Just to observe as I did not understand the game.
What I came away with was that they are rabid fans of the game similar to how we are in Vegas and our pin ball machines,
just crazy.

What do the serve in such restaurants? Roots, bugs, dirt?
You mean, there’s a difference between NK and SK Korean food? That is, other than the lack of it in NK?
Penn & Teller did a tour in China, and showed street market vendors selling that stuff. Can't remember if they partook of any of the comestibles.

The now-defunct Esquire Channel had a reality cooking show called "Knife Fight", iirc, and "dirt" was one of the ingredients the two chefs had to incorporate into a dish in a season finale.
