NEW YORK - Tom Petty's family says his death last year was due to an accidental drug overdose.

His wife and daughter released the results of Petty's autopsy via a statement on his Facebook page Friday night. Dana and Adria Petty say they got the results from the coroner's office earlier in the day that the overdose was caused due to a variety of medications.

The statement was posted moments before the Los Angeles coroner's office issued its official findings, which confirmed that Petty had a variety of medications, including fentanyl and oxycodone in his system.

They say Petty suffered from emphysema, a fractured hip and knee problems that caused him pain but he was still committed to touring.

Howie and I opened as a duet to a Byrds concert at UWM.

After my first hip replacement, I realized that I like to poop more than the little pain relief I got for opioids.

>>>”This was Tom Petty’s last song performed at his very last concert just a week before his death on September 25.”

Thank you very much for posting that. I hadn’t seen it and was a big fan. It does really seem like a ‘last song.’ Poignant.

He was a great songwriter and performer.

Sad story. He should have had that hip taken care of.

No kidding. My man has had both hips replaced. First hip he came home the next day, second hip came home same day.

Take care of yourself (elevate the leg and ice it), definitely do the post-op physical therapy, you'll be good as new.

Speaking of The Byrds, there was a great scene in the Petty documentary, where he was working on Roger McGuinn’s solo album, and he heard one of the songs that was written for him, and he proceeds to tear it to shreds, basically admonishing Roger for even considering to record such crap.

I’m with you (raises glass) plus opioids don’t work right for me.

That can cause death or when used properly will not normally cause death.

Fentanyl is an excellent drug but out on the street it’s deadly.

Another senseless death due to addictive prescription painkillers-what a shame.

I never take any drugs-even Advil/Tylenol OTC is only for stitches or dental surgery, etc and for a day or so only. I more often have the glass or two of wine rather than any OTC, though-never have taken any prescription drugs, and will not unless my demise is imminent and I want to check out quietly.

Yeah, right. Have you ever had a 16 hour surgery. They would need more than wine.

Maybe for bunion removal.

Of course I don’t know what kind of surgery they had.

Yes, street drugs are dangerous. Pain medicine prescribed and used responsibly for even 3.5 years does not have to cause addiction. Dependent, yes, addicted no.

The opiate epidemic is made up. If you remove ODs from street drugs and intentional ODs there is no epidemic. Pain patients are suffering because of an epidemic that doesn't exist. Discuss will go up.

Yep! Howie. I think it was his first gig. He was a talented kid who liked my guitar playing.

Some people it makes them sick. Some people don’t like the feeling. Some people (too many) LOVE the feel and can’t get enough of it. Don’t feel superior because your system is different or you had a better upbringing. You’re still human.

Tragedy..accident...he was a smart man...it wasn’t who he was. And yet he knowingly was on what.....six...seven medications and not your run of the mill stuff for a 65 year old. Sad he couldn’t figure it out, or his loved ones.

I know a LEO who accidentally got Fentanyl dust on himself and went into a comma for two days.
