BENTONVILLE, Ark., Feb. 9, 2018 – Walmart (NYSE: WMT) announced Rachel Brand will join the company as Executive Vice President, Global Governance and Corporate Secretary. Brand will report to President and CEO Doug McMillon. She will be responsible for the organization’s Legal, Global Ethics and Compliance and Global Investigation, Security, Aviation and Travel departments, along with her role as corporate secretary.

“We are fortunate to have a leader of Rachel Brand’s stature join the company,” McMillon said. “We have strengthened our governance capabilities and Rachel will help us continue on that journey. Her strong character, capabilities and experience will enable her to contribute broadly as we shape the future of Walmart and strive to serve our customers even more effectively.”

Brand is replacing Jeff Gearhart, who retired at the end of January. Brand brings deep academic and professional experience to her role, coming to the company from the U.S. Department of Justice, where she served as Associate Attorney General, the department’s third-ranking position. Brand, the first woman to serve as Associate Attorney General, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate and sworn into office May 22, 2017. As Associate Attorney General, Brand oversaw thousands of attorneys and professionals across the department’s civil law divisions, including Antitrust, Tax and Environment and Natural Resources...

She will be joining Walmart April 2 and will relocate to Bentonville with her husband and two boys.

Buy American.

Trump, do not knuckle under to the Chinese brigade.

Bring back production to America.

I buy American whenever I can.

And I don't complain about where the sh!t in Wal-Mart is made because I don't even know where it's made. This might come as a shock to you, but some of us don't shop at Wal-Mart. Imagine that.

She was supposedly the solid conservative who would have taken over for Rosenstein. I guess not. That spin is now highly suspect given her hasty departure. thanks

umm, no, this Walmart job only opened recently, the previous occupant retired in Jan. 2018.

But I would assume anyone going through the Senate confirmation process and accepting the #3 position in DOJ expected at the time to serve a lot more than 9 months. Most of them do.

She must have gotten pretty sick of the political situation, and/or she didn’t want to stay around for what comes next.

No Wal-Mart within 200 miles of me, so I rarely, if ever shop at one,

I wonder if she was completely disgusted to see Rosenstein still in office after it was revealed that he had signed one of those FISA warrant applications on Carter Page.

True, but she also may have no appetite for replacing Rosenstein and dealing with the mess.... otherwise, she would stick it out and expect to become #2 this year.....

At some point the corporate $$$ became irresistible (reportedly she can make well over $1 million per yr in such a position with salary plus stock benefits).

Today I stopped at Raley’s in California outside of Sacramento. I was looking at some tomatoes for the salad and every tomato they had except one type small little things easily confused with the ones that were right next to it everything was made in Mexico except this one and they had 10 different types of tomatoes.

Right, I just figure she could have had a job just like this one — maybe not Wal-Mart, but surely another Fortune 500 company — any time she wanted.

I somehow manage to largely avoid buying from China. The vast majority of Chinese good are crap. I don’t buy crap. I buy quality, and it lasts. Cost per use is far below what I’d get if I bought Chinese crap.
Cheap electronics, furniture, clothing, shoes, you’re not only driving American companies out of business, but you’re ripping yourself off.

She is only 44. She must have done something right in her life. I’ve never had a desire to climb the ladder in someone else’s vision, but I haven’t been successful in my own yet - I’m still a salaried schmuck in someone else’s business.

A lot IS crap. The only things I bought there recently are a prescription made in USA, plastic bins made in USA, and a smoked salmon. The local grocery store has a smoked salmon which is keta salmon. I have to go to walmart to find decent smoked salmon.

Walmart could have done a lot better than a number 3. They should have picked number 2 or 1.

Read the excerpt. The job wasn’t open until the end of January. They parked her back at DOJ until the retirement came through.

If DOJ No. 2 (Rosenstein) departs, Ms. Brand would be the logical choice to move into the position and to take over supervising the Mueller investigation. It will be a thankless, distasteful job no matter how well she did it.

By going to WalMart, she gets:

- very significant pay raise
- work that is fairly easy to do.
- corporate travel perks
- a nice big house in a nice gated neighborhood
- private schools and lots of outdoor activities for her boys
- a real vacation in the summer
- warm weather
- away from DC politics

It probably was not a hard choice.

That gated neighborhood thing took me by surprise.

Not any in my area(Eastern MA) ————gated estates, sure, but gated neighborhoods are VERY rare,if there are any at all.

Didn’t she just resign from DOJ?
